We've used MCT for the Island and Town series except we never got through Caesar's English I and I no longer own the book.

I am about the purchase Caesar's English II as part of the voyage level.

Should I just skip to CE II?

Buy CE I original?

Buy the very cool, but expensive, CE I updated with the great photos?

I would do CE 1 and 2, because they really are a complete package.

I can't comment on the updated edition, except to say that it appears from the samples that they didn't address any of the real issues/problems with the original editions, so the changes seem to me to be cosmetic and perhaps not worth the extra money. I'm sure others who actually have experience with the new editions will chime in here.

I haven't read about any issues. Would you mind sharing?

I've been mixing and matching levels for a few years now and it's worked really well. I don't think it's necessary at all to keep them at the same level across the curriculum. Really, it's kind of ridiculous to think of parallel levels of poetry reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar. There is definite fluidity up and down a level with these books, and although a book will occasionally reference one of the other books (i.e. "for more information about 4-level analysis, see Grammar Town"). So I would say there's no need to jump to CE 2 if you want to do 2.

I do have the new CE 1 and it looks great. To me, it looks as though there are more opportunities to use the vocabulary, and I'm hopeful it will help it stick. I did not buy the "Implementation Guide" but looking at the student text it looks very straightforward to implement. The only thing I'm going to have to improvise are chapter tests, which I assume must be in the Implementation Guide. I plan to just discuss with her what the words mean and count that as an assessment, but if you need something more formal, you would want to find out if that is in the Implementation Guide.

Just learning about the whole CE thing. Pretty convinced I want to do CE I w/ my kiddos next year, but I am trying to decide whether to buy the first or latest version, as well as whether to purchase the IM. And THEN there's the temptation to spend all sorts of $$$ and purchase a whole package! :drool5:

I am right there with ya. I have never used MCT, never used anything really since I am just getting ready to start. So I am thinking I am going to get the older version, and still trying to decide if I want to just get the teacher manual or go ahead and get the student book too. Decisions, Decisions :D

Well, since making that comment, I have decided to use the older version TM. Definitely more economical, and since my children are still fairly young, I don't think we need all the extras. Our history is always rich in literature, photos, etc, so they won't be shorted there by not choosing the classical version. I am going to stick with our current language arts choices, rather than switching all over to MCT. We are making several other changes in our curriculum this year, and since our LA has already been working well, I'm going to go with the old, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" approach for LA!
