So our family just went to a dog park near us and

Recommended Posts

as soon as we walked in, some guy yelled at our son for running, yelled at us for not taking off our dogs leash when we should and yelled at us for bringing in treats (We just got this dog 2 months ago from a pound. Due to some issues we had a trainer come and asses the situation-whole other story for another time.... Trainer told us to bring the treats.......)

Ugh-- Not only am I having a hard time adjusting to a dog, we've had cats, far less maintenance....Now I have to deal with rude people regarding the dog.....Good thing my husband was there, he handled it. I was still shaking...I really don't like verbal confrontations...I am usually stunned into silence or respond loudly and forcefully which really doesn't help:glare:

I've never been to a dog park but I don't see as it is any of his business unless it is against the rules. Are there rules of etiquette at a dog park? I'm not much help. It would bother me as well and I'm not sure that I would go again if it was just me. Maybe a different time of day when it wasn't as busy would be better.

I used to take my dog to a dog park regularly, and those rules were also in place at our dog park. For a good reason too. A running child could be attacked by an aggressive dog. Treats can pose a fighting problem among the dogs. And some dogs are more aggressive to dogs on a leash. So the rules are in place for a good reason. However, there is no good reason for yelling at you. Calmly taking you aside and explaining the rules is what should have been done.

Are those rules clearly posted? I've never been to a dog park, though I know we have several in my area, so I wonder how anyone is supposed to know the rules.

At ours they are posted clearly. There's a bulletin board in the park, with the rules posted on it. And we were also given a copy of the rules upon registering to use the dog park. I've never been to any other parks, so I dont know about others.

This is very well said! Too bad you weren't there telling us that:) It certainely makes sense the way you explained it.

The park does have rules. The only one that is posted is about snacks. Big oops on our part. For some reason that just didn't register when we looked at them previously. Partly because our trainer said it would be a good idea to bring treats since Dex had only been there a few times.

The interesting thing was after having yelled at us about everything, he put his dog on the leash and stood in the dog park and talked with people for about a half hour. I was just hoping he would leave. It was so embarressing to be talked to the way he did. I don't mind following the rules, but two of them weren't posted.

At our local dog-park the posted rules are a bit different. Dogs are not allowed to act aggressively and picking up after your pet (pooper scooping) is strongly encouraged but there are no other specific rules. (There is also no registration process or fees - this is part of the county park system).

Sometimes we see people with dogs on leash and we did that at first with our one dog that would not come back to us no matter how much we called (he has since been trained to come to us). It is true that dogs can be more aggressive if they are on leash but our dog park leaves it up to the owners to work that out individually.

There have not been any trouble with running kids (and there is no formal rule at our park).

There is no rule about treats either but I can see the wisdom of not having them after our last visit to the dog park. My dd6 is right at "kissing height" and frequently gets "kisses" from medium and big dogs. But last time at the dog park she was just mobbed by dogs of all sizes. It took me about a half hour to realize that she had a handful of salmon treats in her pocket! :tongue_smilie:
