Tap
We are installing laminate in our bonus room. We have 16ft of light birch colored Billy Bookcases in there and the kids desks are the same color too. The room will be used for an office/classroom for the kids. We are using the laminate sold at Costco. They have a color that is very similar to the birch but isn't exactly the same. The floor would be a little bit warmer color that the bookcases. The also have darker colors in an oak color that I don't think would look good but they have a very warm darker color that I am wondering about. I like to combine drastic light wood and dark wood combinations sometimes but I am not sure about this. On the other hand I wonder if the light floor will be too matchy~matchy with the bookcases. The room is totally shut off from the rest of the house and buts up to carpeting so we don't have a problem with trying to coordinate with the rest of the house. This will be the only wood upstairs. The wood in the entryway downstairs is light maple colored wood but when we replace it, it will be with a darker color.
JFSinIL
I'd go for a darker tone that goes well with the birch rather than try to match the birch and be "off" a tad. Deliberate contrast rather then a near miss, if you get me.
Cedarmom
You can usually get samples of the wood. Take some samples home, lay them on your floor, and live with it for a day or so.
