teeterbunch
Just returned from our state conference, but am still looking for a Government course for high school. I want to take advantage of the election year and do it this fall, even though my son will only be in 9th grade. He does love political discussions and I would say one of his strengths is critical thinking....however, we have a lot of skill development that needs to happen with writing. I found an old thread that recommended Great Source, but then an Amazon review characterized it as "left leaning." Anyone agree or disagree? We are interested in a more "libertarian leaning" : ) or unbiased perspective. Oak Meadow uses Democracy in Action (which gets good reviews, but there aren't many). Any suggestions or reviews would be appreciated! BTW...I was thinking of just a semester course, but would be open to a full year. gingersmom
All I could think of was Oak Meadow. I really like their history courses so I think their Government course would be of similar quality. They usually have samples online you can view.

Mouseketeer67
I have the 2006 student text and teachers edition of Democracy in Action. I was lucky to find it at a library book sale still in the plastic wrap for $2. My daughter used it in 11th grade. I also found online quizzes at http://glencoe.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0078600537/. My daughter liked it and I will use it this fall with my youngest son.
Lori D.
Check out this recent thread for lots of options, many with links: What are you using for government? BEST of luck in deciding what fits for your family! Warmest regards, Lori D.
Julie in MN
We will be doing government through MFW. However, I really like some of the C-SPAN materials for election time. They have things like sheets for evaluating debates or advertisements. They store a lot of video links on their site. Plus they do some electoral college stuff. If you register as a teacher, you can access more lesson plan type stuff. http://www.c-spanclassroom.org/ P.S. Note that you can print out their electoral college map, but if you order one of their free posters, well, it's a *classroom* sized poster, has been known to take up our entire living room floor on election nite :) Julie
imeverywoman
I just purchased Notgrass this weekend at my state convention. I was planning to use SL, but fell in love with Notgrass, believing that it will give us the necessary info and leave us time to pursue other courses of interest. TheApprentice
We're using American Government by Ethel Wood along with the teacher's manual and activity guide. The activity book has a good selection of activities to do.
BrotherAtticus
If you want Libertarian leaning use Uncle Erics what ever happened to justice and his Are you Liberal? ereks mom
I just bought Civics in America (McDougal Littell), based on recommendations here on the boards. It's marketed as a text for 6th-12th grades. I will be using it with 8th, 10th, and 12th graders.
Kareni
I've added the tag 'government' below. If you click on that, you'll find some other informative posts. Regards, Kareni
teeterbunch
We used A Noble Experiment https://www.zeezok.com/a-noble-experiment-activity-book Did you use this curriculum with a co-op group, or just complete it on your own? Thanks!
tori@thehomefront
We're doing a self-designed course, since we have so many books about American Government already. I went to the AP Government site and copied the test objectives, then went through our books and found the corresponding info. I threw in some papers, charts, slideshow, etc. assignments, and we're calling it good. I would think you could probably do something similar with library materials, if you wanted. hsmamainva
We used NCCS for American Government this past year for 12th grade. My oldest son LOVED it (he loves politics and constitutional studies). http://www.nccsstore.com/Study-Courses/products/2/
teeterbunch
I found some materials I'm really excited about (from Cathy Duffy reviews), so I thought I would share by replying to my own post. Basic American Government by Clarence Carson American Democracy and Economics by John De Gree, published by The Classical Historian The second resource appears to be like the Critical Thinking in US History series. Thanks for all the great suggestions! ashley
