wy_kid_wrangler04
and what chapter is it recommended for? I am doing MOH and SOTW following this schedule next year with dd 5th, ds 2nd and ds 1st. I am planning this now but I just have SOTW (not the AG). I am taking book recs from MOH to supplement our year but there are not a whole lot. So this is the reason for my question. :001_smile: I don't care if you have 1 MUST read or 10 but I want the absolute best recs from SOTW1 in your opinion? Thanks :D
fruitofthewomb
:bigear: I have been wondering this same thing. Our library only has about 2 of the recommended books from the SOTW Activity Guide so I may buy the ones that are must haves. Thanks for starting this thread! mrs.m
We just started SOTW 1 for a co-op this summer. I got my ideas from this list: http://www.guesthollow.com/homeschool/history/ancient/books.html. I went off of what I could get from the library and found some goodies next to those books on the shelves. My kids love the "you wouldn't want to be..." series. They read those on their own. My youngest loved "Archaelogists dig for Clues". I had to read that one 3 times. My 9yo loved "Captain Fact's Egyptian Adventure" and now when I reaad SOTW he seems to know all the facts before I even get to them. I thought it looked fluffy but it seemed to really get the info in his head! My youngest is reading "Magic Tree House, Mummies in the Morning". That's all the further we've gotten with it. Some of the books have been great and informative but these really stood out!
Aurelia
Greek and/or Roman myths, D'Aulaire's version is good for the grammar stage. Bulfinch's Age of Fable might be better for your eldest. We will be using McCaughrean's One Thousand and One Arabian Nights, Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff and Roger Lancelyn Green's Tales from Ancient Egypt. Beyond that, I don't know. I've heard the Gilgamesh trilogy is really good, and Black Ships Before Troy and The Wanderings of Odysseus (Sutcliff) are highly recommended. We will have read them before we get back to ancient history, though (I hope).
Heidi
d'Aulaires Greek Myths, some sort of Bible Stories that you like, (we are also listening to the KJV Bible on audio), the trio on Gilgamesh: The Last Quest of Gilgamesh, the Revenge of Ishtar, and Gilgamesh the King, and Famous Men of Greece and FM of Rome by Memoria Press (I don't have these but would really like them). I don't have a book rec. on Egypt yet.
Hwin
Agreeing that you must get D'Aulaires Greek Myths This is the version of The Odyssey my 5 yo liked http://www.amazon.com/DK-Classics-Odyssey/dp/0789454556/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1337804400&sr=1-1 We also really liked Gerald McDermott's books (Zomo the Rabbit, Jakata Tales, etc) and Misoso (African folk tales). They were just fun, and we were able to get them from the library.

MtnMama
We have loved D'Aulaire and the You Wouldn't Want to Be series. And of course Percy Jackson, which isn't technically history but makes my son feel super smart for recognizing all of the mythological references. magnificat
There was a recent thread (I think around April 17th, 2012) about SOTW 1 book recs. I am sorry, but I do not know how to link that thread. It was titled "top ten books sotw 1".
NittanyJen
We first started homeschooling when my two were 7 and 10 (pulled out of 2nd and 4th grade in public school, in February) and the first three books we read out loud together were Padric Colum's "Children's Homer," Penelope Lively's "In Search of a Homeland" (the Aeneid) and Geraldine McCaughrean's "Epic of Gilgamesh." We didn't tie those in with SOTW, but they would fit nicely.
