x/p My dd is seeing the developmental/behavioral pediatrician on Monday

Recommended Posts

I could use advice and prayers! Cora was diagnosed with ADHD in February by her pediatrician. Her appointment with the behavorial pediatrican for a full evaluation and treatment plan was originally scheduled for July, but the office called me yesterday and told me they had a cancellation for Monday, so I took the slot. Now I'm freaking out a little. I thought I had more time to research. To be honest, I have been in survival mode for months, and now I need to focus on this appointment. I know they will have a lot of information for me, but I suddenly don't even know what I should ask. Any advice? Should I just chill out? LOL!

Great that you got the cancellation.

One thing that can be frustrating about these appointments is that some clinics have much better set ups than others to speak with parents alone. It can be really hard to have a 100% honest conversation about your kids problems and flaws right in front of them. Some doctors understand this but a surprisingly large number seem to have no awareness at all that it is a problem. So, if you don't know the clinic set up and you have the option to bring along your husband, friend, or someone who can watch your daughter in the lobby for a few minutes that might be helpful.

I would also suggest a written list of questions.

Good luck!

:iagree:

We had ds evaluted at the Olson Huff Center, in Asheville. The Dev Ped didn't provide any private discussion time, before or after. However, I did have my dh take our son to the bathroom at one point...and I used that opportunity to divulge certain things I would never relate in my son's presence.

Is this just an intake appointment? If so, then you will likely be asked a million questions, they will observe your dd under certain circumstances, and likely send you home with a list of things to do before you come back for your final appointment, at which time the official diagnosis will be given. At least, that's how it worked for us.

It is our first appointment with the specialist, so maybe that is considered the intake appointment. I honestly don't know. Thanks for the info!

I have no one to take with me. My husband is an electrical foreman on a construction site and cannot take the day off on such short notice. So it's just me and Cora. We'll just have to see what happens, I guess. :/

We are going to the Olson Huff Center as well.

I would just suggest talking to your dd beforehand about why you are there. I think it makes them feel a little better about you talking about them in their presence. Also maybe go in with a list of concerns that you have citing specific examples (written down) that you can just hand them. For example, I might list:

-social anxiety- has melt-downs or crying episodes when faced with new social situations (sometimes at the event, sometimes before the event)

-unusual fears- has a irrational fear of insects, particularly flies. We have had to leave places because of the number of flies (picnics, camping).

I think having a list like this will help you understand exactly why you are there and will give the doc a starting point without you going into details in front of your dd. I also have a section where I put my "educational" concerns since I am also his teacher. I usually outline my educational goa

S for him, so the doc knows where I would like for him to be. HTH!
