diaperjoys
I need to order a set, and I'm wondering if there are any sets that are particularly good/bad?????
boscopup
I just got the blue ones from Rainbow Resource. I use Cuisenaire Rods more, but I like having the base-10 set also (if nothing else, it's good for building "gun ships").

My K'er uses C-Rods almost every day but the Base 10 set is vital when we do need it. I also have the blue starter set that comes with a cube and flats. KristenR
I love ETA Cuisenaire (now known as ETA Hand2Mind). They offer tons of things and have really great deals fairly regularly. Plus, the customer service has always been great.

nukeswife
I got mine from rainbow too, but went for one where each type is a different color. My son loves colorful things. Our units are yellow, our rods are green, our flats are blue and our cube is red. Oh, I found it on their site. This is the set I have. Farrar
I bought a set of flats and a single cube because I just wanted to use the C-rods for the other pieces. I think it was marginally cheaper that way maybe...
Crimson Wife
It's a bit of an unusual place value manipulative, but I really like the Digi-Blocks set that my MIL gave me after she retired from teaching 3rd grade. The nesting aspect really helps illustrate the concept of composing and decomposing 10's and 100's in a very concrete fashion.
Spy Car
I would second getting a big set of Cuisenaire Rods and adding a set of base-10 "flats" (to give 100 values). The manipulatives are the same scale and C Rods and "flats" give one the best of both IMO. Bill
diaperjoys
I like the idea of having C-rods too. Maybe I'll do both; I'm glad ya'll brought it up.
Kuovonne
I like any base 10 set that uses the centimeter scale and doesn't interlock. I don't think the colors or material matter. I also like to combine base 10 blocks with Cuisenaire Rods and DecimalMods to demonstrate even more math concepts.
