Julie in CA
Highly likely. I like so many veggies, but the turnips nearly did me in. Pretty much the only time in my adult life that I spit food out of my mouth rather than chewing it up and swallowing. :001_huh:
KatieJ
Well, I tend to think of them as tasting more like broccoli, specifically the core of a broccoli stem. They are a favorite here. DH loves them raw. I do too, but I also like them grilled with some butter/evoo and onions in a tin foil pack.
Julie in CA
I like cabbage, and I like raw broccoli stems. I guess I'll give the kohlrabi a try, but I was really traumatized by the turnip, and now I'm a little leery of the unknown root veggies. :D
abacus2
I really, really, really do not like turnips, but really enjoy kohlrabi. It reminds me of broccoli.
dirty ethel rackham
I really, really, really do not like turnips, but really enjoy kohlrabi. It reminds me of broccoli. Same here. My kids favorite way of preparing kohlrabi is to grate it and saute it in the cast iron pan with some butter. Top with salt, pepper and about 1/4 cup parmesan cheese and it's good to go. Delicious. The bulb part of kohlrabi is very much akn to the tender nausea of a broccoli stems. The outside is covered in with a tough and fiberious skin that should be removed with a vegetable peeler. The tender inside is good either raw or lightly cooked. The kohlrabi greens are delicious sautéed in olive olive with fresh garlic. Nothing at all like rutabaga or turnip. Cosmos
Give it a try. What do you have to lose? If you like it and keep a garden, kohlrabi is very easy to grow. I like kohlrabi braised in butter with some chopped tarragon. Delicious!
Riverland
I remember once in college I was telling a friend about the vegetables my dad grew in his garden. When I said kohlrabi - she thought I was making it up. She didn't believe me that there really was a vegetable with this funny name. I like kohlrabi. I do not like rutabagas or turnips (mom used to try to hide them in stew and claim they were potatoes - not!)
Julie in CA
Well, thanks everyone! I have kohlrabi coming in my csa bin tomorrow. Since it's not a root vegetable after all, does this mean that the texture will not be starchy either?
Desert Strawberry
Not really starchy. More wet, like a radish .
