momsuz123
So my 8 y/o dd is being hs for the first time this year. She is a very accelerated learner. Picks up everything easy, teaches herself whenever she can. Ahead several grades in most areas. Do I care to test her or not? I figure why spend the money, we are hsing now, so I just need to challenge her at her level so she is happy. (She was in a private school for 1 semester - she was so bored we had to pull her out. Public school wasn't much better, plus they had other issues at the school that weren't good for my younger dd). Just curious. I am not some parent that needs to run around and say "see, she is gifted." I already know of an obnoxious parent like that. I just don't know what the benefit of testing her would be. Thanks all. I appreciate it.
Crimson Wife
I just don't know what the benefit of testing her would be. Access to certain GATE programs that require test scores would be the biggest reason IMHO. The EXPLORE is a relatively inexpensive option that is accepted by most of these programs. Bang!Zoom!
The one benefit I can think of is pulling out (in a score format) weak areas and strong areas you might not recognize and want to recover on. If something should happen and you need to suddenly move, scores on national tests can be very helpful in school transfers as well. Some schools don't give a hoot about scores, but will only recognize scores plus a teacher (and I mean a PS/BM teacher) recommendation for GATE. Every school is different, and for example, around here, they are maxed out anyway, so no point, no room for one more kid. Sometimes kids really accelerate beyond in some special study, and it can be helpful to communicate those needs to others privately, tutors and such. It gives them a starting map to work with. I think you'd also want to make some inquiries into the style of testing you want to do; there are so many kinds, all with output scores that all mean different things. What type of testing were you thinking of, anything special?

I wasn't thinking of PS-based GATE programs since the OP mentioned she is HS but regional or national ones like CTY, EPGY, DITD, etc. Certain of these do require an outside teacher recommendation as well, but all require test scores for access to their programs. boscopup
I haven't felt a need to test my son. We work at the level where he is and don't worry about what his IQ number is. I also know where his weaknesses are. They're kind of obvious, since they are in such stark contrast to his strengths. ;) If you had a suspected 2E situation, testing might be more useful, but if your DD is doing fine in her academics at home, I wouldn't worry about it unless/until you want access to some of the things like CTY, EPGY, etc.
