What does the "breadwinner" in your house do?

Recommended Posts

My DH is the sole breadwinner. Currently he works a standard full-time week in manufacturing. Unskilled labour. He has a highschool diploma and some further education but no degree. He has been working at this job for 10 years and he is now looking at a redundancy and fresh start - scary but exciting.

We live on one income, even though I earn a bit of money now, too.

My hubby, who has a bachelor's degree, is the bestest Schwan's man around! He works 12-14 hours a day--often 6 days a week--in order for me to stay home with the kids. He's my champion!

My mother orders from a Schwan's guy on a regular basis! I have gotten a few things here and there too. They had this ice cream forever ago that I loved called mini maltball madness. I am not usually an ice cream person, but I loved that! Tell your dh that they should bring it back .

He's a civil engineer.

Right now he's in school for his master's. He won't need it for another 10+ years but I told him it was now or never. I didn't care if he wanted one or not but if he did - it had to be now. It doesn't exactly get easier to go back to school the more kids you have and the more activities they are engaged in!

You do realize that you'd have to change your avatar...;)

My husband is an artist. No, really, he paints. Not houses, not your living room. Paintings. No, he doesn't wear a beret. Yes, I like the smell of turps. He has a degree in commercial art; worked as an illustrator for a publishing company, now he is his own boss.

I did it! Well, I didn't dye my hair, but I did change my avatar. Appropriate, yes?

My husband is a groundskeeper at a state college.

One of the best benefits of his job is that he gets free college tuition for 4 years for each of our children.

He also has a good pension and very good medical benefits.

The pay isn't the best but we make do. The benefits keep him working there for our children's future educational needs, so they can have a brighter tommorrow.

My dh is a RN for two hospitals. He has an associate's degree in nursing, but he easily makes 3 times more than I did as a public school teacher with a master's. Though he works insane hours, it has allowed me to be a full time stay at home, homeschooling Mom. Love it!

We have two part time jobs. DH owns a window cleaning business and we own a dance studio. On average we each work less than 20 hours per week. He has a BM in music technology and learned the wi.Dow business from his dad. I have a MA in theatre. His busoness grows each year and he will be the primary bread winner, I am cutting back on my hours at the studio.

DH is a Pathologists' Assistant. Basically it is equivalent to a PA, but specialized in Pathology. He has a Master's in Pathology and a Bachelor degree in Russian.

We lived apart for two years so he could go back to graduate school. I worked to support our family during that time and my mom watched our boys. So I feel very grateful that we are now able to be a one income family.

Dh is a Senior Oracle Database Architect (which means that he designs rather complicated database systems and is an extreme geek) for a large computer services company.

Previous to that job he, well, did the same thing for a different, large software company.

Before that he had taken a short break from his computer geekiness and was assistant vice-president of a college/seminary...a job he did not like.

Don't you know, geeks are only happy when they are being geeks:lol:

My hubby owns his own company. He sells parts (o-rings, gaskets, pumps, etc.), mostly to the nearby military bases in Virginia, Maryland & DC.

He has a BA in Business with a minor in Finance.

The best part is that, since 1999, his business has been located in our basement so he works from home. :)

My DH is a self-employed internet marketing and analytics consultant. He has a bachelor's in business and an MBA. He just started his business in the last six months and so as it's growing I still work part time from home as a transcriptionist, but I hope to quit in the next six months and just focus on the kids.

For the ones whose DH's work for Disney, I am SO jealous! I would love to work for Disney, myself. I think I would need about 3 more foreign languages, however, before I could work there. :tongue_smilie:

My DH works from home, but he's not always the breadwinner. It depends on how many shifts I work myself.

DH is an agronomist and works for a government agency doing crop seed field inspections. He manages about fifty employees doing the same all over the state. Lots of driving during the summer months, but good hours otherwise.

He has a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Science and a Masters in Agronomy.

Breadwinner is dh. Hmmm, so he collected unemployment for 6 months after he was laid off last July. He's got an MBA from an Ivy. (Doesn't pay the bills ;)). While he was diligently looking for work, he would get 1-2 day consulting gigs here and there, and he started helping out a couple local businesses with networking issues, and a couple of friends with home theater issues.

After his 26 weeks of unemployment, he refused to continue to collect. So, he's making a go of it on his own. I'm thrilled! I loved growing up around a small business, and I think it'll be good for the kids. :) So,the breadwinning in our home is a mix of corporate consulting/training, small business networking and home theater design/tuning. Got that? :D

Okay. Sort of a spinoff from another thread.

If you live on just one income from only one job, what does the "breadwinner" of the household do to earn a living?

Dh has a degree in Elem Ed, but had to make the decision not to teach because it didn't pay enough to be a one-income family. He did start out in a school system as the IT guy (paid more than being a teacher), but then moved out of the schools into business IT.

My dh has a Bachelor's degree in Communications. He runs a commercial oil business for a NASCAR team. He also has his CLS (certified lubrication specialist) certification. We call him the "snake oil salesman".

He travels a lot for his job, all over the US and Western Europe. We are very thankful since I have always been at home with the kids.

Dh is a model builder/designer for Walt Disney Imagineering. He has a high school education and scattered college classes just for fun, mostly not in his field. Previously he worked in makeup/sculpture/moldmaking in the movie industry and learned that and modeling on the job.

That is so cool!
