DianeW88
Did you enjoy it? What did you like the most about it? What is your opinion on the new changes with it and would you order the "old" or "new" core? I have a week to decide, apparently, and I'm on the fence.
mom&nana
:bigear: I'm looking at Core F as well.
lillehei
We didn't like it at all. The EHE was cumbersome and dry and took way too much time. Some of the books were great and others were a disaster. We sent it back after 18 weeks when my daughter came down crying that she didn't like school anymore because of Core F. She loves history now that we are doing SOTW. We still throw in a lot of extra historical fiction, which she helps me pick. We use paperbackswap.com or Amazon 4 for 3 promotion to keep getting more books. BUT, I see many changes have been made so it might be worth your time. I loved the idea of understanding the Eastern Hemisphere and the 10/40 window, it just didn't come together like we were hoping.
DianeW88
They have made quite a few book changes. I like the looks of the books they have added...based on Amazon reviews. I was wondering if the ones they eliminated were ones that previous users considered dry or boring.
leeannpal
Yes its the best year we had. We augmented SL until it wasnt really SL. We followed a loose unit study approach based sort of on the IG schedule. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QHOlXaQoRaV8zgaAv-14D_GSHSjupGg9tL-THChDiWo/edit I love your book choices and plans! You have done so much of the leg work that I was planning on doing myself.
DianeW88
The revision IMO is troubling and I would not do the new version without heavy padding in the history department. Not covering Ghandi or Tamerlane via bio seems egregious. We did not use the EHE when we did it either. Rather we completed a map and a fact sheet for each country we "visited". The core IMO is just ok but it serves as a wonderful jumping off point to do something great if you augment it. And ditch the missionary stuff bc there is nothing worse than studying a culture thru the eyes of an 18-19th c ethnocentric missionary. Thanks for the info! Yeah, I was going to skip the missionary stuff anyway. Just not my cup of tea. And I was definitely planning on doing my own tweaking...sort of merging it with WP's "Children Around the World" and Konos's fabulous unit studies on Russia and Africa....because I'm insane that way. So, it sounds like the new core may be ok if I do my own thing with it. I did notice that some of the old core 5/F books were only for sale used on Amazon, so I was wondering if they are now out of print and that's what prompted the changes. I totally get that, and I don't want to be frustrated trying to hunt down books that aren't readily available. Looks like a fun summer of planning for me!! And I can't tell you how much I'm salivating over that thought. :D I love planning curriculum! Oh, and your resource list is FABULOUS!!!! Thank you so much! I will definitely be folding that into the mix!!
