MomtoCandJ
My dd has a dry, hacking cough. What can I give her, with all the new regulations around about to give children for cold, I'm at a loss. She is 3 years old, 32 pounds, and 36 inches tall. Thanks
Random
Maybe a little bit of honey? Or a bit of lemon in some herbal tea?
Kebo
We also use honey, but I'd also add Vicks VapoRub and a throat lozenge or hard candy (if you don't think she'd choke on it).
delaney
I wouldn't want to suppress it if it is dry. Does she have a cold? For night try the Vicks on the bottoms of her feet with socks trick. During the day I would do warm liquids and maybe Mucinex to loosen it up? If there is nothing to cough up maybe she needs allergy meds? MomtoCandJ
I was really thinking it has to do with this wacky weather. 85 degrees in Tawas City, MI.... usually we are waiting for one last snow storm.... actually I still am. I don't think she can have mucinex, she's only 3.... most things like that are at least 6 and up.
Kebo
I wouldn't want to suppress it if it is dry. Actually, it is a productive cough you don't want to suppress (so the lungs can clear the material).
MomtoCandJ
What kind of tea? I have some sleepy time tea with vanilla... would that work with the honey? I just hope she doesn't have the beginnings of what ever bug is going around the school. When I dropped her off this morning I was told that 6 kids out 16 was out sick yesterday. melissad2
Actually, it is a productive cough you don't want to suppress (so the lungs can clear the material). :iagree: I give a spoonful of honey and it works like a charm :)
Momof3littles
Yep, the more recent studies show honey works as well as OTC cough syrups, and it is safer too. We do a lot of tea. Vaporizer?
Susan in TN
A pharmacist once told us to try tea with lemon and sugar (he specified that it had to be white sugar) and serve warm. It worked for us - actually we were traveling and warmed up some lipton lemon ice tea from the convenience store. Also try honey.
indigomama
One of our Peds recommended honey for coughs. You could also try teas, the one you have on hand is fine. Also, try giving her a fruit ice smoothie, just having her sip something will help keep the cough at bay.
Dandelion
Another vote for honey... Rather than mixing it into tea, I just put it in a cup of hot water and squeeze some fresh lemon in it too. Tastes great and really soothes the throat.
Mergath
Dd had something similar earlier this year. May or may not have been pertussis, we never did find out for sure. We tried honey, and it helped a bit, but the only thing that really made a difference was small doses of prescription cough syrup. Don't waste your money on the homeopathic cough medicines they have for preschoolers. They don't do a darn thing. :glare:
