ABQmom
I was thinking of having dd read this book, but I know there is a small scene in it that details somewhat a rape. How have you all handled that scene with your kiddos?
cbollin
It's in chapter 33, if you want to preview it yourself. I didn't think it was that bad. There was no gratuitous wording, and only enough was revealed to lead the reader to know what happened. The word "bre@st" and "thi9h" were used. I think it's a great opportunity to show the teen reader how someone can become victim to such predatory actions and how someone can pervert the Gospel (or any other religious doctrine) in a way to support their own agenda, in this case sexual exploitation. I didn't think it was over-the-top in any way. I think it was tastefully done, if such a topic can ever be so. :iagree: and the rest of the chapter with how Miss Alice decided to raise Margaret and the Quaker community response is beautiful. I think at high school age, it shouldn't be a problem or too much blushing or anything. -crystal
Rebecca VA
I read the book as a very naive teen. While there's enough information in that section for the reader to understand what happened to Margaret, there's nothing that defiles the reader's mind. It's not titillating -- it's just a sad story, gently told.
