Coconut oil woes

Recommended Posts

I just discovered the source of my severe abdominal pain. it is coconut oil. :crying: i get in these moods where I simply can NOT force myself to eat no matter how hungry I am. A few nights back I was so hungry right before bed. There was nothing in this grocery packed house that I wanted to eat so I had a tbsp of coconut oil and went to bed. If I Go to bed hungry, I will not sleeep, or once my blood sugar dips, I will wake up. Anyway, the oil kept me satisfied and I slept like a baby. Yesterday I again awoke with SEVERE abdominal pain. I could barely move all day. Again I was hungry last night but I could NOT force myself to eat. I was wiiiiiiiide awake until 6:00 and then took a 3 hour nap.:glare: even though I was starving all night, I just couldn't eat.

At around 1:00 I finally got hungry again and had some eggs cooked in coconut oil. Again,SEVERE pain. I am positive it is not the eggs.

I eat coconut. I drink coconut milk. Neither have ever caused issues before.

I will not be giving CO up as it is too good for the brain. I will be having smaller amts more frequently.

Anyone else?

Btw, even though my stomach hurt I made a Mexican type salad with dressing consisting of olive oil, water, apple cider vinegar, cumin, lime juice, salt and pepper. After eating a bowl of salad the pain went away. So I will make sure I have plenty of food with my CO and I will be having ACV three times daily.

I just never heard of anyone having this issue before.

Could the oil be causing gall bladder issues. What kind of pain is it? Is it gut issues? I think if it's gallbladder you should cut back on oils and make sure you get apple cider vinegar when you do have oil.

I can only ingest around 1 TBS a day, and I break that into little servings throughout the day. I went all out the first time I used it and wound up incredibly nauseous, so I cut back and have been working myself up to an amt that works but isn't too much for my stomach. I have not experienced pain, though.

Like you, I've found that when I don't have CO, my thinking/reasoning ability decreases and my memory is terrible. I've had memory issues for over two years now, and the first improvements I've experienced have been since taking CO.

I'm sorry you're having pain. I hope you can find an amt that works for you. The easiest way for me tolerate it has been when I bake with it or when I melt some in hot chocolate.

The severe pain is around my navel, deep inside my gut. I never felt pain like this before!

I also have GI issues that come and go. I have removed all dairy and most gluten. Hope that helps.

I do plan to get back on a regular routine of ACV.

Thanks!

Take it in smaller doses! I had some of the same problems, but they went away after a few weeks. The amazing change in my memory and thinking ability is worth sticking it out.

I am hoping that this is true for me. I am so scattered. I actually bought Focus Factor!!! Of course I don't remember to take it most days!:tongue_smilie:

Hm. I don't know that I'd quite chalk it up to that just yet. I'd keep experimenting to see if that is really it. Maybe lay off it for a week or two, then try it again to see if you get that same reaction.

I think it is so hard to say exactly what it is.

Like with Kimmie, it has also made me very nauseous. i have noticed, however, that if I have enough food in my belly, the co doesn't seem to bother me.

You might look into l-glutamine for the stomach pain - I have been using it for a few months now and it has really helped. One thing that was making my stomach pain worse was some of my supplements were in gelatin capsules and they seem to tear up my stomach.

I have the same issue with refined coconut oil-like Spectrum brand. Only unrefined coconut oil is tolerated by my body.

Mine is unrefined. I wanted to make sure I got an excellent source. It is by Nutiva.

Millions of people in the world have healthy brains without coconut oil. If it's bad for you, you need to give it up. Your brain will be fine. :D

Well....... My mom, her sister, and both her parents died of dementia or alzheimer. My mom was only 68 and her sister was only 70. Also, i have had numerous concussions, even severe, in the past decade. I am doing all I can to help myself.

I agree with you for the general population, just not myself.

Wow! I never heard that about gelatin capsules before!!! Is that what the source of your pain was?

I've had a recurring ulcer for a number of years, but finally figured out that the gel caps make it extremely upset and cause a lot of pain. I had forgotten that fact and started taking a higher dosage of magnesium (in gel caps) and was having horrible stomach pain and finally realized that it was probably because of the pills. I've since switched to a tablet form and it's made a huge difference, but the l-glutamine also helps a lot as I'm getting older and having more hormonal GI issues.

Have you considered taking CoQ10?

http://www.preventive-health-guide.com/coq10.html

CoQ10 for Alzheimers and cancer

Now, scientists are hoping its effects on the heart, blood systems, and tissue toxicity means CoQ10 can soon be used as part of a treatment program for Alzheimer's disease, and for recovery from stroke. They’re also hopeful about the possibility of using it as part of a treatment regimen for women with breast cancer (together with conventional treatment and a nutrional program involving high levels of other antioxidants and fatty acids).

I do think it could be yeast die off or that you need to slowly build tolerance. My son had to build up tolerance to coconut oil which he takes for a metabolic condition. He also takes coq10 and I certainly would in your case (and do in mine). But take it in a special, very well used form. It's different enough from forms available elsewhere it has orphan drug status for use in my son's metabolic condition. It's tischon brands only carried by epic4health online.

Yeah, I often think....what did people over here DO before they could process and ship it here?

We take fish oil.

We take fish oil. I think it's hard to ignore the latest health hype of what is so fabulous for health, but I think if you hurt after eating something it's not worth it.

It gives my DD a stomach ache, but that's because she gets diarrhea from it.

:iagree:

There are lots of other things one can do.

Us too. We take fish oil. Even though we live in the tropics and get local coconut oil, we seldom take it - party because we forget and partly because it's not very appealing to us.

I fully agree that if something causes pain or extreme disgust and loathing - one should not have to take it.

Life is too short to take supplements and foods that do this to us. :grouphug: I never thought I would say that. ;) Me, of all people.

Fish oil doesn't work on the memory the same way. It's a different chain fat. I took fish oil for years before I started with the coconut oil. It never worked in the way the coconut oil does.

Thank you. I didn't know that. Guess I will start taking coconut oil more regularly.

I wonder if one does all the other stuff that one can - turmeric, anti-inflammatory diet, etc. - but not take the coconut oil or at least, less of it - if one can still benefit?

I agree that it could be a die off reaction. My three children and I have been taking CO for around a month or a bit longer. Two of the three kids have started complaining of tummy aches (not bathroom related, just a mild cramp) shortly after ingesting it. I'm pretty sure that they have yeast in their systems. I say this because *I* was toxic with yeast before taking it and noticed some stomach issues. My youngest can even have rather offensive smelling symptoms ;) from it, but I truly believe it is a die off reaction for him. Like you, the benefits from the CO are too great for us to walk away completely. I'm re-evaluating the best way to get it into them. I wonder if night-time might be better, my kids and I tend to be IBS-like and have weak tummies in the A.M. anyway.

FWIW, I'd eat it "plain" before I put it in fudge. Having toxic amounts of yeast that caused hallucinations, severe intestinal cramping/distress, vomiting, fatigue, etc... It will be a cold day in Hades before we consume fudge (or similar) again :D

:iagree: If your body is rejecting something that painfully, it's probably trying to tell you something.

This is a very late reply to the op: I have tried CO as a supplement and it worked wonders for me initially -dry, itchy skin and scalp became soft and itch-free; felt energetic, etc. However, I did notice some stomach distention/bloating which I initially attributed to other dietary factors. Unfortunately, it became apparent quickly that it was indeed the CO, and in fairly small amounts -even a tsp or so- it caused bloating, distention and even actual pain.

I have researched this and asked various "alternative" type nutritionists as well as CO companies and never received a satisfactory answer. It was so, incredibly, frustrating because it seemed to be of such help in many ways.

Years later and after much research about nutrition, I finally have come to the conclusion that I suspected but could never confirm: I think that the Lauric Acid is responsible and the issue is die-off, or herxheimers.

Right now I'm starting a regimen for reflux, starting with excluding wheat from my diet, probiotics and digestive enzymes and also eating a low-carb diet. (I've done low-carb before and all of my yeast-type symtoms ceased.) I'm thinking that once I get a handle on the yeast via the low carb and kind of fortify my digestive system with the probiotics and enzymes, I'll start to take some CO in very, very small amounts, so that there won't be a massive die-off (the low-carb diet having killed off quite a bit of the bacteria as well as the very small doses) like I believe happened before.

If anyone is interested, I'll post my results here.

The answer that I see so often --"if it doesn't agree with you, you probably shouldn't take it-- isn't very satisfactory to me. Our bodies are complex, and as homepathy teaches us- often tiny changes cause dramatic reactions. I've found over and over again with health that sometimes things don't work for a reason and you need to adjust, adjust, adjust and that it often takes tremendous amounts of research and time to find what's wrong and what helps and what reacts/works with what. So, I'm off on my continuation of the pursuit of health!

Wow. Huh, that's really cool.

I actually just dealt with it, kept taking it, though in smaller amounts, and now I can take quite a bit without being bothered. BUT, I've been LC for quite a while now, and so that may have played a part.

It’ll be interesting to see if i’ll get any response for my about 10 years late post:)

Same from me. Undiagnosed Gi problems parallel to what you’ve mentioned. Just wondering how you’re doing with cofee?

*found these topic after a web search looking for people who had adverse reaction to coconut oil (i have adverse reaction to many things, indeed)

Since the OP isn't on the boards any more, I'd say you're better off asking elsewhere. Start your own post if you like, but you're probably best going somewhere that specialises in health topics. This is a homeschooling board.
