This thought just popped into my head today. I took a CPR class 12 years ago and I don't remember a thing. If something happened to my DH or my kids, I wouldn't know what to do except call 911. Do you know CPR? first aid beyond antibiotic ointment and a bandaid?

Yes. I took a recertification class a few years ago for getting our foster license. I should watch some Youtube videos to refresh, as it has been a few years now.

Before that, I hadn't had it in 10 years or so. A LOT had changed when I did my renewal.

One thing I remember from our new class, is the speed of chest compressions has gone up. Now they suggested doing it to the beat of the song "Staying Alive". LOL

I do. I just got certified in CPR and first aid last summer. But that doesn't mean I remember enough of it or feel confident enough to really make a difference. I could probably manage, though. The thing I found interesting, something I didn't know before, was that even if you use CPR to revive someone who's heart has stopped, it's not enough to keep them going. They have to get to a hospital. I knew they should go to a hospital to get checked out, but I didn't know it's vital for survival, even after CPR.

I took a class from a great paramedic who emphasized "squeezing the heart" (chest compressions) over anything else. He said if you don't or forget to do breaths the compressions will still help as there is still oxygen in the blood. He felt a lot of CPR training is too complicated and wanted to make the training easy to remember in a crises situation.

When I took CPR/first aid/AED, he said they now believe chest compressions are more important than breaths. He also said that if you don't have a face mask, you don't need to do breaths if you don't feel comfortable doing it (the person WILL throw up).

We have had it since we brought ds (almost 17) home from NICU.

Usually because of jobs though.

Now because of fostering also.

The only thing I've had to do, which was plenty scary enough, was helping a choking baby (10months). He got a piece of Cucumber off. We were in a restaurant and I had to go through the procedure THREE times. Not a darn person in the place offered to help, called for help, or just tried to get the baby from some crazy woman if they didn't get what I was trying to do. Absolutely amazing. I can't even imagine! I didn't panic; but I should have asked for help when once wasn't enough.

From about 10 years ago, all I remember is ABC: Airway, Breathing, Circulation. I cannot recall the proper timing for the breathing or the proper way to push on the chest for circulation.

However, I am pretty practiced at whacking little people on the back to dislodge food they may or may not be choking on :D

Other: In theory, yes, since I've had to attend several classes. In practice, I'm CPR-phobic. Though now I've read the thread and learned I don't have to do the breathing, I might not be any more.

In general, I prefer not to be troubled with anything other than minor cuts, minor bruises, minor burns and epileptic fits. Oh, and I too can perform the whack choking kids cure.

Yes. We had it in school in 9th grade, again in 11th grade, then an extended five week camp style course in First Aid, CPR, emergency rescue and disaster help in college. This has been thoroughly drilled into us.

Btw: in my home country every driver must take a first aid course before allowed to get a driver's license.

I vaguely remember CPR -- I took a class in high school and at my job about 9 yrs ago -- but I am pretty good at first aid and do such things regularly. My kids and I get a lot of little injuries.

We were taught -- Hey hey! are you okay!

And then something about calling for help.

Many years ago, I got EMT certification. This fall, I did Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED through Girl Scouts. I think the trainer said that both courses were on a two-year re-certification schedule now. (I believe that CPR/AED used to be one year.)

I am always amazed at how much the rules and procedures change over the years.

That is such a good idea.
