BatmansWife
I had it all figured out that I would use Shurley for next year, 3rd. But, then I started looking at MCT Island...and I really like that. I did Shurley years ago when my oldest was in 4th, so I am familiar with it. But...if I choose MCT Island, I don't know that my dd will be able to go right into Town the following year and then Voyage the year after that. Island looks so good...but Town and Voyage seem pretty hard. :001_unsure: My dd is *not* gifted (the word I seem to see a lot at the MCT website) and she will be turning 9 the month after she starts 3rd grade in September. So.....now I am considering alternating between MCT and Shurley. The reason I think this is a good plan is because I've heard people alternate Shurley anyway....and I think dd will need time between MCT levels (on the other hand, maybe the two programs totally clash and it would be a disaster....which is why I need input). I could do: 3rd Island 4th Shurley 5th Town 6th Shurley 7th Voyage Or..... 3rd Shurley 4th Island 5th Shurley 6th Town 7th Voyage (I could do Shurley 7, but that puts Voyage into 8th grade and that doesn't seem right). Does anyone have any advice? I guess the million dollar question is if I should do Shurley for 3rd or Island for 3rd and go from there. I'm like this right now: :willy_nilly:
didadeewiththree
I like both so well that I am alternating them. I do MCT for a few days, then switch to Shurley for a day or two. And all the while, I am doing spelling from the Phonics Road, even though that program has grammar and writing, etc built into it. I like to pick and chose what I like and to try new things as long as Im not confusing my daughter. Shurley became too predictable for her and she knew the answers but didnt really understand what they meant. MCT is helping her understand the context better, instead of just recongizing what answer Im looking for. Its been a challenge, especially since she is in 2nd grade. She is gifted in LA, but these concepts are hard to keep straight. i dont know what next year will bring but I definatly plan on keeping both Shurley and MCT around. Crimson Wife
I alternate MCT with Killgallon. I would do "island" in 3rd and then Shurley in 4th.

This is interesting. I hadn't thought of alternating between both during the same year. Hmmm....I'm going to give this some more thought. I alternate MCT with Killgallon. I would do "island" in 3rd and then Shurley in 4th. Good to hear from another person who alternates programs. I am leaning toward MCT for 3rd too. Are you planning on MCT Island, Town, and Voyage for 3rd, 5th, and 7th then....with Killgallon in between (I haven't even thought about the levels after Voyage yet)? I've never even looked at Killgallon. I'm a little afraid to.....
