Dr. Hive PLEASE help!! fish oil related, but kinda urgent...

Recommended Posts

on my bout here for better health , ive been talking with my mom about it lately. she is 68 and in great health. she takes a blood pressure pill daily for about 4 years now, but is on the very lowest dose her doctor says.

well she read some info about fish oil and decided to try it for better health. she got some of the gummies and took 2 last night before bed. (now keep in mind, i have been giving my girls fish oil for years now for add/adhd and i just compared there dose to hers and its nearly 3 times higher!!). apparently she woke up at 4am, went to the bathroom and then went to turn the AC down and fainted in the hallway. my dad ran out, called paramendics and her blood pressure was 90/75. she went to the doctors this am and he told her not to take any supplements any more besides her multi vitamin. :glare:

i guess im confused and extremely concerned in several ways. why would this happen?? he said it was the fish oil for sure, but yet i give it to my girls??? its making me 2nd guess all the homeopathic ways ive been going here in the last few months (especially since i had mono and just dx'd with epstein barr virus).

please any thoughts here are appreciated. i just have not a clue what to think, and besides now i have both parents yelling at me to stop taking every supplement i take!!

No idea, other than it interracted with her medication. We do take fish oil daily, have been for years. We take Ascenta, though, lemon flavoured, not the gummy things.

Fish oil omega-3 fatty acids can have a hypotensive effect in some individuals, more pronounced in those who are hypertensive, much less so in normotensive folks.

What puzzles me is why her doctor wouldn't eliminate the presciption BP medication to see if her BP normalizes with just fish oil? He's basically saying keep up the presciption rather than looking to see if something natural may work as well for her to keep her blood pressure normal since her BP dropped while on medication, that might be something to explore, no meds for the BP to see how she does!

that thought went through my mind as well. and the funny part is, this doctor used to be my doctor as well years back before we moved and he used to push all kinds of supplements and vitamins. he basicaly freaked on her for taking it, hence her freaking on me lol! so there is no way at this point that i would convince her to change her thinking and thats truly sad. but now im really very concerned for me and the kids and dh and what we are taking. my youngest dd takes several meds for adhd on top of the supplements....

my 89-year-old grandma has been taking fish oil for about 30 years and my own 67-year old mother has taken it for 20. My mother's on thyroid meds and my grandma's on aspirin for her arthritis. Other than that, they are drug-free.

I don't think you have to worry about supplementing your family's diet with fish oil because of your mom's fainting spell.

I would vote coincidence.

I realize it scared your mom, and she's not likely to take fish oil again. Years ago, my husband ate fajitas and then got a horrible case of the flu. He knew the fajitas didn't cause the flu, but it was years before he could eat them again.
