kwg
Too much for a 9 year old or okay? He read it in WWE and is really excited about it but it seems like he might be too young? Is it scary? Anyone read it recently? I am assuming he wouldn't really get anything out of it other than a cool alien story.
freeindeed
I think a 9 year old could handle it. My oldest son read it when he was younger, and I recently let my two middle children watch the movie with Tom Cruise. They all liked it and were not afraid. kwg
I did not even think of the movie. That might be a fun follow up!
sewingmama
My 4&5 yo just watched the movie and they were not scared. So if your child is not extra sensitive then he should be fine at 9.

There is fairly frequent mention of charred bodies, a few tense scenes. It's unremittingly bleak; Wells wrote it partially as an indictment of the conduct of British colonials in Tasmania (the Black War) a few decades previous. Dana
I just read it with my son at age 9 in the past couple months. There were some scenes he found intense and he did ask to stop at one point, but he can be kind of sensitive on things that are intense. I didn't hear about any nightmares. I just asked him if he enjoyed reading it and he said, "It was okay but freaky." We didn't do the more recent movie but did the 50s version after finishing the book :)
thescrappyhomeschooler
My kids' theatre teacher read it to their class this fall. My kids were 7 & 8. The class ranged from ages 6-12. The class then did a radio show production, which was why he read it to them, so I think a 9 yr. old could handle it.
readinmom
Might want to sample part of the original audio of it with Orson Welles. When it was originally broadcast, people thought they were tuning in to a real news story. Caused some panic on the East Coast. Would make for an interesting discussion.
