truebluexf
We've had a lot of health issues with my little one this year, and FLL 4 just isn't getting done. We're on, um, lesson 28??? It's been a get the basics done kind of year here. What would you use in this situation? Next year I'm considering JAG or ALL. Should I just use something like GWG or EG to keep things sharp for the rest of the year? Thanks!
sagira
Just a suggestion: you could also put on Grammar-land on Librivox, open another window with the book on Google Books so dc can follow along, then do worksheets created by Jen here on WTM. Just do a search on Grammarland or Grammar land worksheets and it should pop up. I'm on my phone, so sorry, no link. Hang in there!
TN Mama
Is there a reason you can't keep going with FLL?
truebluexf
We can, it's just not getting done right now. Not sure if it's better to get through half the book, or give him something he can work on daily on his own...kwim?
Walking-Iris
Well I absolutely love Easy Grammar, but for the teacher's guide and student book you would be putting down a smallish bit of money just to play catch-up. If you already have FLL 4---maybe just stay with it and use something like EvanMoor's Daily Language Review grade 4. I really like those books. Will let you see real fast where the holes in learning are at as well.
truebluexf
That might be a better idea. I'm sure even with ALL next year, it will have enough review to cover what we don't finish.
DarlaS
I would do FLL, and math if nothing else. Drop the memorization to speed it along a little. Starting over with another program (You are more than 1/3 through) is not going to save you time. Is your son going to be in gr 5 next year? I think he would benefit greatly from completing at least the grammar portion of FLL (even if it took you until Christmas) before jumping into any decent solid gr 5 program. Then just hop and skip through any review at the beginning of gr. 5. I was actually just planning FLL 4 for next year for my rising 4th grader. You can print out the Table of Contents: Take a highlighter to it, and make a plan to get done what's left of grammar. Might not look like so much once you do that. In2why
Look at Growing with Grammar. Every level repeats and builds. The it will give a solid understanding of grammar concepts. The other benefit is that it is basically independent, so if time to hands on teach is the issue, then your child can complete this as long as he can read the lesson, and directions. You only need to check it every day to make sure he understands and go over what he doesn't.
MeaganS
ALL won't be available indefinitely, so I wouldn't plan on that one.

truebluexf
OMG, I just looked around...1400 pages?! Pfff no freaking way!!!!!!! There ARE other subjects besides grammar, LOL! Looks like JAG may be the winner.

It always gets done, and that is the best type of curriculum ;).
Brenda in FL
I would do one of two things: 1) Continue using FLL but only do the new material (each lesson specifies new and review) and skip the poems. Skip the narration and dictation if you already have that covered with a different program. or 2) Start your choice of grammar for fifth grade now. Make sure you start at the beginning and that he's got the concepts down before progressing too fast. I'm in a similar situation with my youngest kid - a third grader who hadn't finished FLL 2 until just recently. We are skipping FLL3 and starting FLL4 this week. I love the FLL series. truebluexf
Yeah...I'm thinking about this or JAG next year, depending on what I want my involvement to be. I like the idea of transitioning him to more independence for 5th grade. I think I'll just save my money this year though and get through what we can of FLL 4. Knowing there is no more ALL....I might just transition DD1 to another curriculum next year too. FLL is awesome, but without something similar that I like to transition to later, why bother? The rigor isn't there in other curricula that I like, and I'd rather see that rigor continued or picked up in the later years more than 3rd and 4th grade, I think.
