#1, the absolute best book we've read as a family is The Wind in the Willows. After that, some of our favorite authors are:

 

Hilda van Stockum: her Bantry Bay series and Five for Victory series were particularly enjoyed.

Marguerite Henry, especially if you have a horse-lover in the family.

Anything by Thornton Burgess - these books are SUPERB. They teach so much about life. They're animal-based stories and are very deep. My dc loved these, as do I.
