I heard a Great Horned Owl in the yard tonight

Recommended Posts

When I went to let the dogs out for the last potty break they started barking and then I heard the owl. I was afraid it was trying to take off with my poodle dude.

Once I got the dogs back in the house I got the kids who were still awake up and outside. We just went to an owl festival this weekend and they were able put their owl calls into practice!

We went for an owl prowl on Friday night for a couple hours and didn't hear a thing @ the festival. So it was cool to hear one in our own backyard tonight. :D

Very cool. I wanted to go to the owl festival, but we had too much other stuff going on. Maybe next year. I hear that it's pretty cool.

Did you use a screech owl call to lure the great horned?

No, I didn't call to attract it. I just let the dogs out for the pee and stood there waiting for them shivering and it started hooting.

I'm thinking now perhaps it was my little doggie he was after. When I started calling it the hooting started to get farther away.

Yikes! Keep an eye on that pup!

I have been told you can use a screech owl call to attract larger predator owls; I tried it once and got a barred owl to hoot back!

I was also told not to do it during nesting season, so fall and winter are the best times to do this.

Yes, but if you call the screech owl and one of their predators that little screetch owl might get eaten. :001_huh:

At least that's what they warned us of at the owl festival. Call the smallest first and don't call for a larger owl when the smaller one answers.
