Janie Grace
Dh just brought some home. Pup is 8 weeks. No idea if they are a good idea or not...
Impish
My mom used to breed dogs, and the rule was no rawhide, ever. If you drop rawhide into a bucket of water, it'll swell to several times it's original size...and the same thing can happen if the dog swallows a piece. Dogs have died as a result. Not worth the risk. Pig ears, bully sticks, cow hooves, those are great.
Janie Grace
Thanks, guys. I knew you'd know!
swellmomma
Pig ears, bully sticks, cow hooves, those are great. Okay to prove my stupidity, I thought those things *were* rawhide. What is the difference?
vettechmomof2
Okay to prove my stupidity, I thought those things *were* rawhide. What is the difference? rawhide is the hide from critters where the pig ears and cow hooves are exactly that...pig ears and cow hooves. Most of the pig ears still have tattoos! Antlers are a safe chewing toy! Cow hooves stink and pig ears are very high in cholesterol and can stain the carpet.
Impish
Pig ears are just that. Dried pig ears. Same w/cow hooves. Bully sticks...they're made from bulls.
Doodle
Would the ears and hooves be a good option for a dog with an intense chew need/desire? My dog has totally obliterated every toy he has been given.
Impish
Prepare for the ears just to be munched down. I've found the hooves last longer.
vettechmomof2
Prepare for the ears just to be munched down. I've found the hooves last longer. def. hooves can last a long time, pig ears are a much quicker chew treat. antlers will last much longer! dirty ethel rackham
I have a wonderchewer here as well. With an intense need to chew, I would go for a reindeer antler, nylabone, bone from the butcher (our dog is older so we let him have the marrow), bully sticks, kongs. I have a wonder chewer here and these things help keep him satisfied. I think the pigs ears should be a once in a while treat. Haven't tried the cows hooves. The bully sticks stink well enough. A great place to get bully sticks less expensively is bestbullysticks.com.

We don't have the freezer room to do an exclusive raw diet, but Wolf's buddy hunts, and we get leg bones from moose from him. Scared the carp out of a meter reader though. He saw these huge bones, still w/meat on them in the yard...stood yelling outside the gate. Wasn't going to risk coming in if there was something around that could have anything to do w/eating bones that big!
swellmomma
Okay in prep for the new pup I bought a ton of treats, 1 was a pig ear with tattoo still so good, but there was 2 packages of these twisted sticks. One says pork hide the other didn't specify. Are those rawhide? So those are bad? BEfore I bought them I stopped at the vet and asked about stuff like that and they said no problem, but maybe they were thinking of something else
KidsHappen
My dogs love cow hooves but they stink to high heaven. I am the only person in the house that can tolerate the smell. They also have several (like maybe a whole pig by now) large bones that I fill with peanut butter, liver paste or cheese and they will chew those for hours as well. I also give dental stix. My Pom-Chi only weighs about 5 lbs and has little tiny teeth and he can still chew on a fairly large bone. You can also try a Kong. The large one stood up to my Golden who ate a soccer ball. Everything I read from people in the know says "no rawhides."
zimom
Our service dog organization also says absolutely no to rawhide.
RoughCollie
http://www.dogstardaily.com/training/errorless-chewtoy-training Dr. Dunbar basically advocates using Kongs, and discusses Kong stuffing in this section of his book. In addition to Kongs, I gave Aidan Nylabone puppy bones to chew. When he got bigger and I stopped worrying about him losing his baby teeth prematurely or breaking them if I gave him something too hard, I bought him an antler and bully sticks from Best Bully Sticks. Gradually I branched out to other animal parts ... cow ears and a selection of other offerings from the same company. Now, he loves the Himalayan dog chews, too (boiled and dried yak and cow milk -- very hard). Aidan does not eat the cow ears -- he chews them until soft pieces break off, which he leaves scattered around the house. I give Aidan rib bones, raw, under supervision. I'm leery of them breaking into sharp pieces, so I take them away once he's removed the meat and is basically done with round #1. I do not give him shin bones or bones from a pet store. This is because I've read they are more apt to splinter and hurt a dog than raw rib bones are. Above all, if the product is made in China, I avoid giving it to my dog. Janie Grace
Thanks so much for all the great info! Are bully sticks what I think they are? Doesn't that gross anyone else out??? :001_unsure: I guess I need to get over it!

EmilyinND
I would say no rawhide, too. We have used rawhide strips with our dogs. Our 4yr old Cocker/Cavalier chews his slowly & hasn't had issues, but our 1 yr.old Springer chews it until it's barely wet then swallows whole. We have had to reach down & pull them out & he has vomited them up, too. So, no more rawhide!! My dogs like the durable nylabones & kongs. They are both big-time chewers. Miss Innocent
No rawhide, ever, ever. Thanks so much for all the great info! Are bully sticks what I think they are? Doesn't that gross anyone else out??? :001_unsure: I guess I need to get over it! My Tibetan Terrier loves her bully sticks! (We call them pizzle sticks in the UK.) It makes me giggle and I must admit that I rather enjoy telling people what they are. I'm very childish! We've just discovered antlers here. They seem really good and don't make a mess or smell, unlike Megan's other favourite - dried tripe - that really whiffs! Emma x
