Using WWE Workbook

I just ordered WWE2 for my son. I know people here have different methods of using the book... some people mention splitting it into two sections and having it spiral bound, some people tear out the pages, etc.

Would it be easier to tear out the workbook pages as DS needs to do them, and put them in a binder? Or would it be easier to order the PDF of student pages and print them off as needed? Just trying to visualize what would work the best. Thanks!!

I like having them spiral bound. The first year we used WWE, I just tore out the pages and I felt like I had loose papers everywhere.

This year I'm using WWE2 for my oldest. I cut off the binding, split the book, and spiral bound both halves (well, Kinko's did ;)).

Since I already had the Teacher's Manual part of WWE1, I just downloaded the .pdf for the student work pages, took them to Kinko's on a thumb drive and had them printed and spiral bound for my middle kid.

I also had my FLL books spiral bound, and had my Math Mammoth .pdfs printed and bound. I love having everything altogether in one book. It's easy to keep our place, and it's easy to look back and see the progress they've made :)

I like this idea. I have done this with the teacher side, but didn't even think about doing it with the student side. We used to just put our WWE student pages in our writing binder and MM pages in our math binder. Have you checked/compared prices with officemax to see if Kinko's or OfficeMax is cheaper? I have done mine at OM and seems like it was around $3 or something.

I'd either cut the book in half and do the spiral binding or tear them out as needed. Right now, we tear them out as needed because I haven't had the initiative to do the first option. :tongue_smilie:

Exactly... I like the spiral idea best, but just wondering how long it would take me to remember to drop them off at the store and then to pick them back up!! :D

I haven't compared. It seems like I paid about that at Kinko's, but I honestly don't remember. I had a huge order done--several books bound and printed/bound for the upcoming school year, so my bill was pretty hefty :)

Cris--my local Kinko's will call you when they're ready to pick up :)

I was just using a separate notebook but soon plan to buy the PDF of the worksheets only (not the whole book) and print them off. Then I can sell of the book when I'm done with no copyright issues. The pages are around $10 at the well trained mind store.

I will print off copies for each kid and pro lick them. Three hole punch would work too.

We tear out each page as we need to use them for a lesson. My son really likes the growing gap in the middle of the book showing how much he's done.

FWIW, I don't keep of the papers once they are done. Just me, but I don't feel that I need to retain that daily incremental progress. I do have a few sheets from the beginning, a couple from the middle and a couple from the end to show change in ability.

ETA: I've only used the book with my youngest, so I view it as rather consumable. I'll give the teacher side away when we're done. And we move too often for me to stay sentimental with papers.

The WWE workbook is a pet peeve of mine. I'm all about nice and "pretty" books. I hate that I have to "destroy" the book and then reassemble it to make it useable. I really wish they'd make the workbook pages in a seperate book. My personal rant aside , I personally liked buying the book as opposed to printing off the pages. It's a lot of printing...

I had thought about using them because the pictures are so cute, but the lines are so wide that the girls have a hard time writing on them. We use a plain wide-ruled spiral bound notebook for language arts, including WWE and spelling. We also use it for various assignments in FLL 1 and 2. FLL3 is all inclusive.

Okay, I've made a decision. (It's a momentous occasion, decision making seems hard for me these days. :D )

I'm tearing the pages out of the workbook, letting DS write on them, and sticking them in a folder. Occasionally I will go through and find a few samples for our binder, and toss the rest. And if the size of the writing lines are not right for DS, I will buy a composition book.

There, that's done. I knew you were all dying to know how I'd end up handling this!! ;)

I took mine to Kinkos and had them take the spine off...took the covers and spiral bound the teacher section, then three hole punched the student pages. I keep those in a binder and take them out as needed so DS can work on paper at the table. Once he finishes a page, it goes into his work binder.

For WWE1, I got the PDF student pages and printed from that for a bit, but the lines were so HUGE that I abandoned that. Then I just redid the pages in Startwrite (easy to do) and printed them each week. For WWE2, I've either made pages in Startwrite (usually with two days' worth on one sheet), or I just have him work in a notebook. Depends on how lazy I'm being. :D

For WWE3, it looks like I'll just get the PDF version again.

If I were to use the student pages in WWE, I'd probably have it rebound into two different books. I hate having a chunk of pages missing from my book. We use FLL3 workbook (hard copy), and it's not aesthetically pleasing now that we're halfway through. :tongue_smilie:

Call me strange but I can't see any reason why tearing them out wouldn't work just fine. I guess I could see binding them if you needed to keep them for a portfolio, but otherwise we just throw them out when we are done. I might keep a couple, but I don't keep all of the kids work.
