ravinlunachick
I got dd one of these cool sewing machines for $5 at our local thrift store. Everything was new, still wrapped in plastic inside. Never been used. But it won't work. I thought perhaps the A/C adapter was bad, so I put in 2 D batteries, and still, nothing. Any ideas on why it won't work? The instruction manual says not to open the machine, because there are no serviceable parts inside. All the cords and wires are in excellent shape, no wear or visible broken places. To top it off, this thrift store does NOT take returns, even for credit. Bah.
RoughCollie
Call the manufacturer's customer service for help.
DawnM
I second calling the manufacturer.
Renthead Mommy
Did you double check to make sure the power button is fully engaged? And double check to make sure the outlet you it plugged into is working? Is the outlet hooked to a light switch? Remember some outlets will have a bottom plug that works always, but a top plug that only works with the switch is turned on, so you hook a lamp to it and work it from the switch. The guide on that one says it takes 3 D size batteries  (I found a pdf of the guide online, and looked at the troubleshooting section -- I assume you looked at it, too.) ravinlunachick
WHY do I never think of calling the manufacturer in times like this? I must be so conditioned to do it myself or find help on the internetz. Duh! I linked to one I found via googling images, GailV. Ours takes 2 batteries. It's model # 30516. I didn't look for a pdf online, because the instruction manual was in the box. (No troubleshooting section, though. Just thorough instructions.) The outlet is working fine--not connected to a light switch or anything like that. Thanks for the advice, though. I'll try to find a # for Simplicity. mom2samlibby
Those kiddie machines are worthless. I'd see if the thrift store has a cheap real one for her instead.
Harriet Vane
Those kiddie machines are worthless. I'd see if the thrift store has a cheap real one for her instead. :iagree: Sorry, but it's true. If it's any consolation, I lost $30 on a kiddie machine for my dd a number of years ago. As I checked around with others, I heard story after story about how bad these plastic kid machines are. I found the manufacturer spectacularly unresponsive to my complaints. justasque
Those kiddie machines are worthless. I'd see if the thrift store has a cheap real one for her instead. That's been my experience too. A neighbor bought one for his daughter; I wish he had talked to me first as he could have gotten a decent used one at a similar price point. We made a skirt with it, but not without a ton of trouble. Don't waste your time on it. Keep an eye out for a vintage Singer or Kenmore from the '60's or early '70's.

Yup! :iagree: Even if you can get it to run, it will never work right because the tension will always be off. At least you only paid $5 for it.
