Chalkdust cheap with new editions. Is it possible?

Recommended Posts

I just finished reading through past threads from 2009 where everyone was able to find CD dvds and texts super cheap. Most of the links now are not the same anymore so I was wondering if anyone had figured this out with the newer editions.

I'm looking for Prealgebra and Algebra 1. The costs of the texts are upwards of $150 and I can't find the dvd's anywhere. Can anyone give some help?

I'm a bit desperate as there is NO WAY we can afford it from CD new...

Thanks,

Tiffany

As long as you have the ISBN #s, just go to Amazon, Homeschool Classifieds, etc. to search.

Homeschool Classifieds doesn't have much available now, but will in the coming months.

I see an Algebra set w/ text/13 DVDs/solutions manual for $90 listed under "Houghton Mifflin", but I remember getting a set for under $50 on Amazon when I purchased mine.

Also check out WTM's sales.

Some of the DVDs on our sets have been unreliable. They will work on one VCR or computer but not on another, and some not at all, even when new. We have had problems with every set we have purchased, even though they are from Houghton-Mifflin. And other than the precalculus and geometry (can't remember if geom is Houghton-Mifflin), we only use them once or twice a month. For the precalculus, we bought two sets since they were so cheap and that strategy has worked out so far.

Can someone tell me how many dvd's should be included for Pre-algebra for the 4th edition?

And, does this listing look like it would work? It doesn't say how many dvd's are inside...

I bought the cheaper Houghton-Mifflin dvds used on amazon pretty cheaply, but many of the video clips didn't work. They were snowy or they worked fine for the first half and then there was no sound or they skipped directly from the opening to the end. Of the video clips that we tried to watch, about 1/3 worked just fine, another 1/3 worked partway (where we got at least some use out of it), and another 1/3 didn't work at all.

At the time I was chatting with somebody else on the high school boards who had also bought the Houghton-Mifflin (or maybe it was Harcourt Brace, don't really remember now) dvds and she had the same issues with the same chapter sections, so it looks like a production issue rather than the particular discs I had.

So just be aware that if you don't buy the chalkdust dvds, you may have problems with them.

I bought the DVDs and texts off Amazon and Ebay. They are all pretty easy to find with those ISBNs. I just got the older editions on the texts and they are perfectly fine. I don't think there are that many differences in the new vs old edition if it is only 1 edition earlier. I need to check my DVDs to make sure they work okay, I only tested out one of the DVDs and it seemed to work fine, but now that the glitch issue was brought up, I will go and check them.

One piece of advice when buying on Amazon/Ebay, try to buy from someone that has a better description of the item or a higher ranking. Don't always buy the cheapest one listed. I bought one text off of Amazon that luckily the inside was in pretty decent condition with no writing, but the cover was severely worn. I was planning on removing the pages from the cover anyway and putting them into a notebook, so it worked out for me okay, but the seller did not describe this in their listing...they just listed it for $1 or so. So, when you see those really cheap listings, there is a reason for those. I am sure there are some honest sellers on there, but not all of them.
