Can Minimus be done orally?

My ds still hates writing anything. I am needing a latin curriculum that can be done orally. We are really enjoying GSWL and will finish it this summer. I would like to start LL1 for fall but I think ds won't enjoy it because he will have to do the worksheets. So I'm going to move LL1 to 5th grade when he hopefully won't have such a phobia of writing. If I purchase both the instructor's guide and the text for Minimus, can it all be done orally?

Minimus can be done orally.

That said, I'm not a fan of Minimus, but I do think LL is great. My pencil allergic 2nd grader had no problem with the LL worksheets. But I only had him write when Latin responses were called for and I wrote the English responses (unless he wanted to, which was rare).

What a coincidence. We just began using Minimus today, and my plan is to do it orally. I don't own anything but the text.

It isn't, however, our main Latin program. I just wanted some fun stories for ds to read, and the background information and historical context adds some interest.

I didn't think of writing some of the responses for him. Hmm, I might end up using LL after all.

Thanks.

When I started LL1, my elder son was very limited in how much he could write. I was his scribe. As long as he could answer me orally, I wrote the answer. At the beginning I even wrote the Latin. Or, he would write one and I would write the other, etc. Make it a joint venture and let him feel successful.

I actually wrote most of his stuff for a couple years. Over time, he gradually took on more and more of the writing. He became inpatient with my writing things and said it was 'faster' to do it himself etc. It was a very natural transition. Now a 6th grader, he has been doing all his own writing for a couple years.

He did WWE one year behind grade level and HWT on his own, but I wrote the rest.

FTR, I am not crazy about minimus either. It assumes that it is being used by a Latin teacher who knows what to teach. It is also pretty thin. I am guessing many Latin teachers use it as a fun enrichment or as something to organize an after school 'Latin Club'. Funny thing is that now my son is in LL2, I think he would enjoy paging through minimus.

But, some people like it very much, and use it to great effect.

Thanks for your response. I now may end up using Minimus as just a fun read for ds.

This is exactly my problem with it. And what's so funny is that in their teacher materials (and I think in their information online) they say how they designed it so that *anyone* could teach it.

We do Minimus orally, just for fun. Dd8 loves it, and we've just started Minimus Two. I don't know how much she'll retain, but she's getting a good ear for the language and is building some vocabulary.

We'll start "formal" Latin next year in 3rd grade. I'll use GSWL and I Speak Latin together.

Same here!!

If you're looking for an oral program, I Speak Latin is a good one. We have just begun using that along with Minimus and the kids are having fun with it. They seem to enjoy the verbal commands and engagement that ISL offers.

:iagree:
