Grrrrr! Handwriting problem...

My dd loves handwriting and picked it all up quite easily. Unfortunately, and I know this sounds bad, she loves to write in her spare time as well. The problem with that is that she's developing some bad habits--like writing things backwards (2, 3, 7, 9, a, p, etc). It's driving me NUTS! The handwriting worksheets she does every day pale in comparison to the amount of time she spends writing "letters" to her friends and writing "stories" about her drawings, so they don't stand a chance at overpowering the bad habits. I hate to restrict her access to all writing tools, but I'm on the verge.

How do I fix this?

ETA: I meant that it sounds bad that I call her writing obsession "unfortunate"--I don't actually think it sounds bad that she likes to write in her spare time. :)

That's perfectly normal for her age. Just continue working through your handwriting practice, and try not to look at what she writes in her spare time.

Seriously, letter formation is a difficult skill, and during handwriting time, she's focusing on that. Outside of handwriting time, she's focusing on content and maybe spelling, so the letter formation goes out the window. This is the same reason why kids often spell correctly during spelling time but spell incorrectly while writing outside of spelling. It takes maturity and time/practice to put it all together.

My daughter does both of those things. She writes well during her copywork but when she writes notes....ack! Things are backwards or letters look awful. She does the same thing with spelling! She can spell a word but when she writes little notes she will spell it incorrectly. I never connected the 2 or thought about why that was. So, I was feeling pretty crazy there too! It sounds like things will start to connect soon.

My DD will do that too. She knows how to properly form her letters, but when she's free-writing, she doesn't always take the time to do so. My favorite is when she starts a word way too close to the right edge of the paper. Her solution is to just start writing the word backwards in the other direction. :tongue_smilie:

I've noticed, though, that as the weeks/months pass by, she makes fewer mistakes during free-writing.
