Bang!Zoom!
Anyone have the short version of why Kern isn't a fan of Howard Gardner? Is it because of treating "intelligence" in Gardner's style of "multiple" intelligence theory that this is somehow a dissolution or barrier of teaching/learing of a whole (human/soul) being? I was listening to one of his lectures today but couldn't pick up on the reasoning, I have to go back and listen to it again..it was the lecture on Rhetoric as an Essential Art. Anyone know? http://www.societyforclassicallearning.org/index.php/resources/media/15-2011-conference-recordings (it's the second one down in the menu if anyone is interested)

angela in ohio
Your best bet is probably to email and ask him. :001_smile:
Bang!Zoom!
Thanks for the idea. I'm going to take one more run through on the lecture here at home..I was listening to it today via my phone with ear buds at school. Not a great situation to be in (distraction wise) - to try to learn. (Ya, I know, oxymoron) I am waiting for everyone to go to bed, get the house nice and quiet, and I'll really listen to it tonight. Gonna cost me an hour of sleep, but Kern's thoughts are worth it. Actually, pretty addicting stuff. :) Edit: Update. I get it. Entirely. If you are bored for some reason, here's the opening text to Gardner's book, "The Disciplined Mind". http://www.nytimes.com/books/first/g/gardner-mind.html I must say it's bone chilling to read that in reflection to the lecture above. Probably the scariest thing I've read all year. Okay, in many years... Edited February 16, 2012 by one*mom
RobinL in Canada
I have not listened to the lecture yet and read down only a bit on the Gardner selection (not all of it, so I may be missing something significant). Could you clarify what you found "bone-chilling" in the article and why you think Andrew Kern would be anti-Gardner? Is it his choice of evolutionary theory as his example of "truth"? Bang!Zoom!
Gosh it's awfully hard to talk about Kern without the other party having listened to his thoughts - it's some pretty deep stuff, and I find myself very blank in going forward to answer the question, I wish I was more "compact" about it all- I just feel an inadequacy to do so. He (Kern) opened a few of his talks with the words, "Why are you here, why are you doing this, what is it you are trying to accomplish?" There's a lot there in those simple questions to think about when it comes to the whole education of a child - and specifically more so in the realms of what is classical in approach. The worlds are so different, and Kern does a great job of making a person think about these very difficult questions. ----------- You know what I would love? I would absolutely love it if we (here on WTM boards) could create a schedule for listening to the Society for Classical Learning media, and then have discussions about them. I think that one talk a week would be reasonable. Just work our way through all of them (there are more than a hundred available for free.) If anyone is up for it, I'd be more than happy to outline a listening and discussion thread for it...sort of like they do with "Book of the Week" on the general forum. It would be a really great time bouncing around the thoughts. I feel they (the talks) border on the realm of profound at times. Anyone up for it? Bang!Zoom!
Okay! It's on! I am going to throw an extra post on the general forum as well. I'm pretty much a zombie at the moment, but I'll manage to build a schedule for this. I think all the ones I've listened to take more than one listening to get at the meat of the matter (this is my style anyway, not sure about anyone else.) I'm also a copious note taker for stuff like this...somewhere in my suitcase are pages and pages of my scribbles I've yet to transcribe (my shorthand is a self-created coded thingy) - I think it'll be a great time.
