J-rap
My daughter is looking for a college that specializes in music, but not classical music. She is a singer, guitar player, songwriter, and has a couple CD's out. But, she could certainly benefit from a music school, and would like to pursue a degree in higher education. Most music colleges specialize in classical music, not the indie/folk style that she does. Suggestions?
Beth in OH
Check out: Belmont University in Nashville: Mike Curb College of Entertainment & Music Business Columbia College, Chicago: Link to Music BA program Berklee College of Music, Boston: Professional Music Major
kilo90
I second the Belmont suggestion. Definitely not classical and a great city for music folk. (Not just Country);)
Candid
Jazz? http://performingarts.uncg.edu/music/performance/jazz Might be too big of a reach, they also have a big classical program.

K-FL
As an aside, I would strongly advise her to understand the business side of music. (Belmont is an excellent school for that. ) The details are what will make or break a career.
memphispeg
Florida State? I went there for grad. school. We used to listen to jazz and rock/folk groups practice at lunch on the music school patio. UGA?- The birth place of all things rock for a while, just not in the actual college institution. Wesleyan in CT - seems to be a huge magnet for creative types of all sorts these days.
J-rap
Thanks -- all the suggestions are great. I definitely agree about the business aspect. It is an area that I know nothing about, so it will be up to her to become educated about it.
LuvingLife
Belmont is an excellent school for music, no matter her style, I would highly recommend them. I might go down there to visit their Buisness school, it's a great college and in a safe area.
Hoggirl
Belmont has been mentioned several times. The Curb College does not require an audition, but does have a song-writing track through one of their BS degrees. They also have a commercial music degree (BM) through their school of music that has a songwriting track (I think). School of music requires an audition. University of Miami has MANY music programs/degrees including contemporary voice and contemporary guitar in performance as well as many music business variations. It is a VERY expensive school, however. Florida State has a commercial music degree. Both of the commercial music degrees at Belmont and FSU really have about two years of standard classical training built into them. Florida State's really gives you a minor in standard business courses. Belmont's Music Business gives a foundation in standard business courses and then jr. and sr. year courses are business courses specific to music business. USC also has a popular music degree which is highly selective.

Fifer Dad
My daughter visited Berklee last summer and she fell in love with it. I was impressed that they seem to place a high emphasis on having on getting their students employed post Berklee. They also have a tract for the business of music. Their musical emphasis is much more jazz than classical.
