FloridaLisa
Ds has received several invitations to join honor societies. Each one comes with a chapter fee and dues. For example, he was just invited to Phi Kappi Phi. He won't turn down Phi Beta Kappa should that come along. :001_smile: But what about these others? *Does it really matter? *Is it just bragging rights? *Does a resume or graduate school want to see several of these? Thanks! Lisa
Gwen in VA
His advisor would be a really good person to ask. I would definitely accept invitations that relate to his major or field of career interest. ODK and PBK are the two to never turn down! TravelingChris
We are paying for dd to join all. I really think it is the wisest thing and we can afford it. I regret not joining the Teacher's Honorary Society since I wasn't a teacher then, just doing work in a department that was parked in the Education college (Criminal Justice). As it turns out, that honor society would be nice to list now that I have been a homeschool teacher, co-op teacher, and SUnday School teacher on my resume. She is joining an honors fraternity which is another way for her to accrue community service and also to do social activities. She is also joining two other Freshman honor societies- they have a one time fee and application and you can always list them.
Barbara H
We skipped the first year honorary stuff, I just don't think it means a lot and it wasn't worth the money to us. I would encourage a student to accept: honorary in their major as these often come with educational or service opportunities and of course Phi Beta Kappa. Students attending community college find it worth accepting Phi Thea Kappa as they have some scholarship opportunities.
Teachin'Mine
Any more information on Phi Theta Kappa? Is it almost as good as Phi Beta Kappa, or totally different?
Barbara H
Phi Theta Kappa is the two year college honorary. Some colleges have active chapters that do service projects. If a student is selected I think it is worth considering because there are some significant potential scholarships. Some transfer schools base awards specifically on Phi Theta Kappa membership. http://www.ptk.org/?q=become-a-member/scholarships
Vida Winter
One thing to consider - honor societies often provide scholarships. You'd have to compete for them, but still it is an opportunity once you joined the society.
