lincap
**I wrote this in the general boards, but I think it is better here** My friend's 6.5 year old daughter has Aspergers and I would like to understand more about it. Does anyone have any resources (web or books) that you consider to be helpful? Does the child have to go to OT to help with it? I am really in the dark about Aspergers but I know the child well and have known her since she was a baby. Her mom is super stressed out about her daughter's behaviors, so I thought if I educated myself about Aspergers, then maybe I could help the mom also (who is a dear friend of mine). They figured out it was Aspergers when she had just turned 6 years old, she did maybe a month of weekly OT but the mom didn't see the purpose as it was mostly having the girl go through an obstacle course, so they no longer go to OT. Any resources appreciated. Thanks!
Guest
I am sure you will get lots of recommendations from those more in the know than me, but I thought I would add these two: - The Way I See It by Temple Grandin - The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome by Tony Attwood
houseofkids&pets
I seem to always recommend books/materials from the Michele Garcia Winner site http://www.socialthinking.com
houseofkids&pets
Oops. I accidentally hit reply. If the child has sensory issues, some good books by Carol Stock Kranowitz might help the mom (e.g. The Out-of-Sync Child; The Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun). There are a lot of resources out there. Are you looking for info on behavior, sensory, academics, etc. or just general info on aspergers?
lincap
Thank you for the resources! I will check them out!
funnygirl
First of all, thank you on behalf of your friend. I have a friend who has always been there for me and my daughter and it has meant the world; ESPECIALLY on those days when her behavior is off the charts and nothing makes sense. The book I recommend is Aspergirls. I found it incredibly helpful in understanding the differences between boys and girls with Asperger Syndrome. lincap
Thank you all so much, and yes I hope to support them as much as possible. At what age do you tell the child that they have Aspergers? Her mom is very into hiding it from her daughter and her friends.. thoughts? elise1mds
- The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome by Tony Attwood This is my primary resource. I also have a copy of The Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun and a couple other smaller books. I've always been open with my son about his Asperger's. He, in turn, occasionally shares it with his peers, but they really don't understand. However, they share the fact with their parents, and that's where the difference lies, especially now that he and his friends are of an age where they can start to actually see that there are some differences between DS' behavior and their own. IMHO, I think being open about these things will encourage questions and can help others understand what's going on as long as the parent and child don't use it as an excuse to get away with behaviors. DandelionMom
Special Needs World has a discussion and support group specifically geared towards children with Asperger's if you are interested.
