plain jane
can they have chocolate chips? If so, what kind? Dd wants to make some muffins for a snack when her friend comes over and wants to make chocolate chip ones. Can we do this? What do I need to buy and/or look out for? What ingredients do I look for? Or, do I need to find a package that specifically says dairy free? ETA: Dumb spelling alert too! Dairy, not diary. Ugh. Renee in NC
Depends on the type. Have her check the ingredients of several kinds.
frugalmama
I believe the Enjoy Life ones are dairy free, but would double check to be sure.
scrappyhappymama
Ghiradelli semi-sweet are dairy free. :thumbup1:
staceyobu
One of the giradelli types (semi sweet?) is dairy free. You can check the ingredients on the back of the bag. It will say "milk" following the list if it contains dairy. I think they have to clearly label the top eight allergens now.
Quill
It depends on whether the person has a bona-fide allergy to dairy or is lactose intolerant (or, I suppose if they have other philosophical reasons for avoiding dairy). I am lactose intolerant, but I eat Nestle chocolate chips. If it were a serious allergy, that's a different matter.
Beth.
I believe the Enjoy Life ones are dairy free, but would double check to be sure. Enjoy Life. They are dairy and soy free; maybe even top 8 allergen free. I can find them in our tiny town's only grocery store, so they should be on the shelf in a store near you. :D

Not sure, but should probably go with worst case scenario.;)

My son has a dairy allergy and we used these in our pancakes today. Another thing to consider is margarine though... you've got to be careful with dairy in it. :glare: I would check with the friend's parents. Our son's allergy is severe enough that I wouldn't trust anything anyone else made. When we're at my folks, we have to bring unopened containers to be sure there aren't any cross-contamination issues. An intolerance would be much easier. (And we're an extreme case.) But Enjoy Life is safe. We also use Earth Balance for margarine. You can find it in cubes at some stores. It works well for cooking too.
