KidsHappen
No major obvious problems. His back just seems sore especially towards the rear. It is entirely possible that he was chasing the kids or my hubby around on the downstairs hardwoods and took a fall as I have seen him do that before where his back legs just slid right out from under him. He is getting a little older now and maybe not handling it as well. Vet also said it could be beginning signs of hips problems because he is having a harder time getting up and down the stairs. I hope that's not the case. Anyhow, he gave him an anti-inflammatory shot and sent him home with a week worth of pills. I am supposed to take him back in a week but the vet is there tomorrow if there are any problems so that is good. The place was crazy though, like the dog psych ward. The vet said he hasn't been that busy in at least six months.
elegantlion
I'm glad you found out. He's a golden right? Remember he's a dog and once the pain stops (due to the pills), he'll think he's better. He needs to stay less active while he is healing, which is a hard point to make to a dog.
ravinlunachick
My beagle did that when he was about 7 or 8 years old. He was even having muscle spasms, and the vet was afraid he'd slipped a disc or something. Nope, just strained his back jumping up on the bed. I got him some little steps to use (this was in the before times, before kids or dh, when I didn't mind a furry creature in my bed), and he was 100% better in a few months. The vet pointed that out. I have him in a contained area right now so he couldn't do much jumping about even if he wanted to. He is still whimpering though and it's breaking my heart. It seems like he shouldn't be in that much pain but I have back pain myself and I know how bad it can be. The little dog is clearly worried. He keeps pacing around him and trying to comfort him. Mine is a big dog (bigger than your average Golden). He could probably just step on the bed if he was so inclind. He is having a hard time getting up and down the stairs though and I really don't know what to do about that.
Chris in VA
Wish we could get our dogs together for a playdate. :D They'd probably be like two old men on a park bench, complaining about their aches and pains...

vettechmomof2
When the back or neck are injured it is recommended to not have them go up stairs as it could lead to further injury. I would try to not have him deal with those right now. :grouphug:
Kathleen in LV
We had the same thing happen with our older (12 yo) dog, twice now. Both times, she was hesitant to jump on the couch. When the vet felt around, her back seemed to be the problem. After a few days of an anti-inflammatory and some paid meds, she was back to normal. I guess they're a lot like people as they age. But I agree -- I'm relieved each time that it's not something more serious.
Night Elf
I have to stay alert for this because I have a dachshund. Last year, he had a sore back and I had no idea what was wrong. He just sat near the sofa and whimpered quietly. He always follows me around but he just walked so slowly that he couldn't keep up with me. When I phoned, they had me bring him in immediately. She did some kind of laser treatment and acupuncture and he was right as rain the next day. But he's not supposed to go up and down our stairs or jump up on the sofa or bed. We use pet steps. But he's a little guy, not like your big guy. I hope he feels better soon!

The vet said keep him contained at least over the weekend.
vettechmomof2
normally for 3-5 days at least but if the vet recommended the weekend maybe that time period. We normally recommend until a recheck is done. Too often when they are given pain meds they feel so much better that once the pain meds are out of there system the dogs are sore again. So def. keep things lite for him right now.
