camikins2010
Anyone using Chalk Dust for their math curriculum? If so, would like to hear your reviews
nynyny
Son has used CD independently for Alg, Alg 2, Geom, and Precalc (currently). Liked all levels except geometry as he didn't feel the lessons and text matched up successfully. Some people complain that the video lessons are too long but we don't feel that way. We purchase the cheaper-than-Chalkdust materials so the price is a-okay for us. HTH Edited February 3, 2012 by nynyny
camikins2010
How do you go about getting it from Houghton Mifflin? I tried google.
Guest
I would like to know, too. I like CD over TT and Saxon. But the cost...OUCH! ISBNs would be great, as well.
nynyny
Be careful and doublecheck what you order. I know I ordered the wrong text one time. Not sure all links work as this info is dated. MomsintheGarden
Oldest ds used CD for Geometry-Calc I, and got a 5 on the AP AB Calc test. He's a math/cs major in college. Oldest dd used CD for Algebra I-Calc II, and got a 5 on the AP BC Calc test. She's a biochem major in college. 2nd ds has used CD for Alg. I and Geometry so far. 3rd ds is using CD for Prealgebra. We like CD here. What would you like to know? GardenMom PS We've got a busy weekend coming up, so I'll try to answer when I can.
ThelmaLou
We've settled into Chalkdust (finally) after using (at various stages) Horizons, Saxon, and University of Chigago Math. We've used everything from PreAlgebra to Algebra II, including Geometry. I do buy everything used piecemeal from Amazon, ebay, dealoz, etc... I used isbns from WTM threads. Dana Mosely is fabulous. Also contact the publisher to get a teacher's account online. (Cengage Learning) Don't take no for an answer. Keep asking until you get someone who knows what they're talking about. You'll need them to send you (email) a homeschool teacher's application. Once you get an account online, you'll have access for each course to any online resources available to other teachers. Terrabelle
Hi all, Saw this post and thought I'd say I just posted a used set for Alg. I here: http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=344534 Thanks. :) Terri
plansrme
My daughter has used it for pre-algebra through calculus, which is in progress. Obviously we are sold on the program. She has not taken the SAT yet, but I fully expect, based on her PSAT score from 2010 (when she was 12), that an 800 on math is well within her reach. She is probably going to a local STEM magnet program next year for high school and will be only the second student in the history of their program to take AP Calculus as a freshman. We believe the other student took AP Calculus AB, while she will probably do BC. Yes, she is a smart kid, but it takes more than being smart to get through a solid calculus program at 14; in her case, it also took a really gifted teacher. My biggest concern about the STEM magnet is that she will find out that none of her math teachers there will measure up to Dana Moseley! ChalkDust is one of the primary reasons that we are considering the STEM magnet: it offers several post-AP math classes, and after this year, I will be nearly out of math that she can do at home. I only regret that she is not going to get to do CD's statistics class. My last CD purchase will be the SAT review program, to refresh everything before she takes the SAT. Fortunately, I have a couple of other students who will be able to use the CD programs I did not resell. CD has been a breeze for us. Dana Moseley is such a gifted teacher. If you buy the program through CD, he provides e-mail or phone support, or I believe you can buy that separately if you get a used set. My daughter has taken advantage of that several times this year, and he has always responded quickly and, even more importantly, with an explanation or analysis that made sense to her. CD is one of the best investments we have made. Yes, it is expensive, but you can resell or reuse it relatively easily. Terri
Dassah
Is there an archived schedule for CD Pre-Algebra (and on)? It took me over an hour today to jot down a schedule of video time for each objective. In other words: Ch 1:1 Obj A (0-6 min) Ch 1.1 Obj B (6:07-16:22) Ch 1.1 Obj C (16:22-22:19) This is something I feel I need to work out before I jump on the Chalkdust ship. camikins2010
THANKS so much for everyone's responses. They have helped tremendously. It's a wonder that CD is not mentioned as much in my homeschool circles.

What is the benefit of a teachers account? What resources are available to you this way? I had never thought of this.
AmyinFL
I need some help deciding between Chalk Dust and a once a week class where the teacher will use Bob Jones, Pre-Calculus. I have heard great things about CD but a little nervous about advanced math only by DVD. Thx!
