Down_the_Rabbit_Hole
What is the spam of US History taught? I know it covers some US symbols (flag, Statue of Liberty), but what US History besides the first Thanksgiving?
Emma
It begins with the Vikings, covers major American symbols, and the individual states (very briefly) We just covered Eli Whitney.
Down_the_Rabbit_Hole
But does it take you through 1800s? 1900s? From Discovery to...?
kandty
My book is packed away and neither Ds and I can remember how far it went. I think I remember talking about the Civil War, but I can't remember anything after that. If I am remembering correctly it was somewhere around that time?? I would think it would be on the MFW website.
cbollin
Take a look on the table of contents on the sample http://www.mfwbooks.com/inc/pdf/advsample.pdf you get into the 1900's because it goes at least up to where Alaska and Hawaii are admitted into the Union. States are overviewed and introduced based on admission order to Union. Wars aren't covered in depth due to age. does that help any? -crystal

mymommy1
We are in week 9 of Adventures, but I"m getting very familiar with it due to planning ahead before baby comes. After the American Revolution, the states pages start. History topics are added in as they come. One week is given to Lincoln and one to the Civil War. After that, it's mostly pioneers and inventors. I really like the level of coverage as we are using this for first grade (minus LA). However, I have added at times using the book basket suggestions in the back. For example, I didn't think the Am. Rev. was covered in enough depth for my sons, who are interested in all things army. So, I've added many of the suggested books and others from our library. We will add a few extra days in to read them, pretend, watch Liberty Kids, etc. For a boxed curriculum, I have found Adventures to be great fun, ease my workload, yet be adaptable. I figured a big part of "depth" will come from the book basket. I ordered several Step into Reading books with an US history theme and I have SL core D and E books to read aloud from. I did call MFW and talked with someone, they were sort of helpful but I got the idea.

"depth" .. it is lower grammar stage. book basket might add "flavor" and "expansion" but don't expect it be "depth" such as logic stage. I think it's there to help expand on interest. We liked Liberty's Kids too. and School House Rock America Rocks. but looking back over the years..... for this stage of learning.... add "depth" with field trips and feed their interest. It will all be cycled again. go to those state parks that have "living history" exhibits. stuff like that. then watch the child and get more books, etc based on what's of interest to them. think of ADV as both history and geography when adding. just one of those mornings for this old mom........ well back to taking my omega 3's and all of that... -crystal
