BethG
Husband has business trip scheduled for Austin in fall and we r going to extend it to family vacation. I've never been so I'd love to hear ideas on where to stay and things to see and do. 3 Kids (all boys) age 6 and under. Thanks.
jennsmile
Since I just planned our trip that was then canceled. LOL! We only live a few hours away so it isn't a big deal and I will do these things later. Children's museum Austin Bats if you come before October. It really is fun but stinky. History Museum Zikler Park And Ikea!
mothergooseof4
Natural Bridge Caverns and the adjoining drive through animal park Sea World is in San Antonio-about an hour drive I think Fiesta Texas in SA Inner Space caverns but the other is supposed to be better
jennsmile
If you head to San Antonio the Zoo and Witte Museum and the Riverwalk are my top three things.
sweetbasil
Can you give me an idea of where you live currently? That would affect what things are interesting to you (i.e. if you are in a major metro, the Children's museum in ATX wouldn't impress). Jann in TX
There are several caverns in the area (Inner Space just north of Austin and Natural Bridge about 1 hr south--but a beautiful drive if you go the country route!) that my girls enjoyed when they were little. Sea World is about 1.5 hrs south of Austin... The Botanical Gardens are nice to run around in-- right across street from Zilker park... Zilker Park has a walking trail down by the river... bring or purchase bird seed to feed the ducks/geese! If the weather is warm you can swim in Barton Creek Pool (also at Zilker)-- you can also wade in certain parts of the river (free). Dinner at sunset at the Oasis... littlebug42
It is a haul up the steps but I loved Mount Bonnell. http://www.austinparks.org/apfweb/park.php?parkId=287 Not sure if they have anything going on when you will be there but I have to put in a plug for my alma mater, St. Edward's University theatre department. http://think.stedwards.edu/theatre/ And for two of my favorite local restaurants, http://themagnoliacafe.com/ and http://www.guerostacobar.com/
GoVanGogh
Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. (And all of the above mentioned locations. We love Austin!)
jennsmile
We love Longhorn Caverns but I think that might be a drive. ;) Mount Bonnell sounds fun.

BethG
Fabulous ideas. Caverns, sea world, ---- you've given lots of great suggestions. Thanks!!!
jennsmile
Birmingham, AL (My boys are nature lovers ; not your Disney theme park types) http://www.austintexas.gov/department/austin-nature-science-center They would love this then. It is a nature center with a large dino pit to dig and a place look at specimens. I didn't care for the animals they kept it reeked of urine, but they did have some animals. Sputterduck
You *must* go to the Salt Lick http://www.saltlickbbq.com/ I can no longer enjoy any other BBQ. I have had it as good as it gets at the Salt Lick.
brett_ashley
Salt Lick is great. Lots of amazing restaurants in Austin. Where are you staying? I like the Texas State History museum--it would appeal to kids (even those not from Texas)! Also like Mt. Bonnell for a very short hike. For a longer hike head to Enchanted Rock and neighboring Fredericksburg.
Julie in Austin
Everything mentioned is good, but if you can get to Fredricksburg, the WWII museum is excellent. You can do LBJ's ranch tour on your way there.
