x/p Sonlight users: Thoughts on using 4 day schedule instead of 5 day

In the fall, we will be using SL for the 3rd year, but it will be our first time using two separate cores (plus I'll have a 1st grader in the mix). I am seriously considering using the 4 day schedule. Other than the obvious fact that there will be fewer books scheduled, are there any disadvantages to using the 4 day schedule? Please share your thoughts with me.

Thanks!

I'm curious about this too. We used WP last year which ONLY offered a 4 day schedule. It was nice and relaxed and gave us a day off from the "norm", but this year with SL, I was planning for 5 day because otherwise you don't get all the books..

The advantage to 4 day, I suppose, is using your 5th day as a catch-up, but I was equally curious if it outweighed what you might miss out on with 5 days.

This is my first year with SL and we (9and 6 yr. old) are using Core B- intro to world history and I am using the 4 day. I do have the 5 day schedule on back, so once in awhile I will look at it to see what we are missing- but rarely. I ordered the extra books anyways, but being our first year I didn't want to be overwhelmed with it all.

I don't feel like we are missing much though- I'm oblivious really unless I look (again rare) and my kids love it and we are learning and having fun. I make sure the kids get math and reading 5 days a week- history I'm okay with 4 days or less and since we do a few outside activities during the week the 4 day is better and that way I don't get overwhelmed; but maybe you will feel a difference since it's your 3rd year?? I just don't know any difference at this point!

The last time I did Sonlight. I used the four day schedule. It really helped us keep up. We are gone to homeschool group one morning per week so it was nice not to have to always be behind on our core. I did add in some of the books that I couldn't stand to miss, but we did them at our own pace.

We are using 5 day this year, but next fall we will use core D and core G with the 4 day schedule and try to condense if at all possible into 3 day. I plan on using the books scheduled for 5 day though. I like to use a book basket for my younger kids that go along with their history or science. They just grab one during the late afternoon and sit out on the swings and read....(another joy of homeschooling) There are always those breaks, too, to plug those 5 day books in.....I look forward to a less than five day history week! It will free up some time to focus elsewhere!

We're doing core F this year, and I went round and round with myself before ordering...because the 5 day schedule has more books! Can't miss those! :D In the end, I decided on ordering the 4 day to save some cash. I figured that since the IG has both schedules, I could always switch if I didn't like the 4 day. I do like it, though. A lot! One complaint with this particular core if that they simply squeeze 5 days of work (with the EHE) into 4, but that hasn't been a problem for us. If I think there is too much work on any given day, I just skip something. ;) I love having Fridays for other things, like worldview, doing a few things from the SL list of life skills, current events time, science experiments, field trips, cultural meals and SL projects, grocery shopping...I just love Fridays.

I had been geared up to do the 5 day, because I didn't want to miss anything, but we have a heavy history load this year (and next) so the 4 days works better to try and lighten the load even a little. THough I still am a perfectionist and so I assign the books from teh 5 day as supplemental reading, and just don't do any extra work surrounding them beyond basic discussion.

We are planning, as of right now, to do cores B and G.

I work nights a lot of Fridays so I think it would really make life easier to do the 4 day plan especially for my oldest (core G). I'm going to be beefing up core B for my middle so I might go ahead and plan to do the 5 day with her but condense it into 4 days. That might work.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
