DawnM
Hamster is finally gone. He was really suffering for the last few months. We named him Scabbers because of all the skin lesions he ended up getting. (I could go on but I am quite sure you want me to stop now!) He was a dwarf hamster and 13 months old. We will NOT be getting another hamster. We are finished with rodents and tiny creatures in the house. Dawn

DawnM
Dwarf hamsters only have a lifespan of 1.5 years to 2 years or so. About half of his siblings already have died. His sister, one we wanted to keep, was given to a 13 year old girl when it was OBVIOUS that he adored her and would give her far more attention than my boys ever would. She was the healthiest of the babies we cared for. She was by far the largest hamster but she was also the most loving. We would open the cage and she would come running and cuddle when you picked her up. I am so glad she is with someone who is giving her daily attention. Mine was male.....he was never loving or all that friendly. My boys would hold him some but he BIT me when I tried to pick him up. He was born in our house, held since 12 days old, but still wasn't friendly. Dawn Oh no DD13 has a hamster that she adores.
GailV
Dwarf hamsters only have a lifespan of 1.5 years to 2 years or so. Dawn Rats have about the same lifespan. We are finished with rodents and tiny creatures in the house. Except that rats need companions. So then after one dies, you end up with a lonely rat. So you get another one. Then the previously lonely rat dies. So you have ANOTHER lonely rat, for whom you need a companion. And on and on and on. It's sad when little creatures in our care die, but there's that voice in my head saying, "how did I get sucked onto this rodent merry-go-round?" Rejoice that you can make a clean break. DawnM
 Yeah, I would NOT like that. I was really surprised. We were given two 5 week old hamsters from Jim's co-worker. She and her kids breed them. They got along really well for about a week until they started fighting terribly. screeching at each other, clawing, etc...Turns out, one was giving birth and protecting her babies. His coworker gave us a knocked up hamster! Dh sent out a very funny email to everyone in the office warning them that Sarah could not be trusted as she pawns off knocked up hamsters without warning. :D Anyway, I truly am GLAD to be DONE. We're currently saying goodbye to rat #3 who'll leave behind three more... They live just long enough to break your heart. Lost one to cancer, one to simply "old age" and now losing this one to congestive heart failure. Meanwhile, the three remaining ones include the morbidly obese one, the one who's growing her sixth tumor (five have been removed in two surgeries), and the one who bled from her girl parts in December and most likely has cancer down there. And we buried a parakeet (cancer) just a few weeks ago. I give up. Pass the Kleenex.
