oraetstudia
Okay, I'm not actually currently overwhelmed, but I think next year might be a tough one. I'll be adding a Kindergartner into the mix, my then-to-be four year old will want to be included, my then-to-be two year old is the master of destruction and climbing the impossible, and we'll be having a new baby in July. This year I've been doing MCT Voyage and Island levels, as well as The Sentence Family, with various kids. We love it. However, I think for next year, I may need to find something that requires less of me, because although I think the best teaching is hands-on, I'm afraid I may be barely keeping my eyes open or my head above water for a while. So what grammar would you consider for 7th, 5th, and 3rd graders that requires not too much from me? CLE is not under consideration, though, I'm Catholic and choose not to buy from them. frugalmama
Since you're Catholic you might check out CHC's Language of God program - very solid grammar, easy workbook style. I love the program but it's too religious for me as a former Catholic.

I really wanted to like it, but at the end of the year I really didn't think my kids had learned a thing.
kristinannie
I know some people who like Seton grammar. You could also use Voyages in English. That is what Kolbe uses and SWB recommends it in TWTM.
Bloggermom
First Language Lessons only takes about 15 minutes per lesson. However, that would only cover 1st - 4th grade. For 5th - 8th grade i'd go with Hake Grammar.
oraetstudia
Thanks! I wonder if Seton is any better than CHC? I looked through VIE once. It seemed like it would take a lot of teaching on my part. Bloggermom, is Hake relatively independent? Dang, I'm picky.
frugalmama
Have you looked at growing with grammar?
Mommy2BeautifulGirls
Have you looked at growing with grammar? :iagree: My daughter really likes GWG, and is able to do it mostly on her own. :D
oraetstudia
Thanks! I'll look at that.
sagira
I second looking at Growing With Grammar. As far as VIE is concerned, if you have a good reader, you can just have your dc read through the student book only and complete the exercises independently, and he'll have learned a lot. Just a thought. We only have the student book, and it explains everything right there. Painless. We have the older edition. This will also make it much less expensive. I recommend only doing the grammar portion of VIE. The writing is not worth it. SWB agrees, as she also only recommends the grammar portion somewhere in her reviews. Bloggermom
Bloggermom, is Hake relatively independent? Hake is completely independent. :)

For 5th - 8th grade i'd go with Hake Grammar. Oh my. FLL 3 and 4 sometimes take almost an hour for us. My ds takes longer because of his fine motor delays (slow writer!) but I would say average is about 30 minutes a lesson!
