Sweet Home Alabama
Would you all please compare these two? Ds is finishing up CLE 600 this year in 6th grade. I'm trying to decide to do Lials BCM or CLE 700 for my son for next year when he is in 7th grade. I would like for him to go into Alg. I in 8th grade if he is ready- thinking about Lial's Intro to Alg. I. Thoughts? Edited January 29, 2012 by Sweet Home Alabama
3byzaz
My son is near the end of CLE 700. He is doing very well and it is pretty tough! Very comprehensive...I am very, very happy with it. We don't have Lial's BCM, so I can't compare, but I did start Lial's Int. Alg - I think - Alg 1 - and I know it is sooo well liked here, but we had trouble with the format. We stopped it! I just love CLE Math, though...so I am not real happy with anything else. NOt sure what to do with this son next. I think I am going to do CLE 800 and then decide from there. It is just such great preparation!
Marla
My dd is in 7th grade and we are finishing CLE 600 in 3 weeks. I'm contemplating whether to keep going with CLE 700 (I already have it) OR switch to Lial's Pre-Algebra. I bought a used copy of Lial's Pre-Algebra, 3rd edition for less than $6.00. It just came in the mail so haven't had time to check it out yet so I'm not much help other than to say that I'm in the same boat as you are! :) Have you looked at Lial's BCM's sample pages? Here is a link (I think)::) http://instructors.coursesmart.com/basic-college-mathematics-eighth-edition/margaret-l-lial-stanley-a-salzman-diana-l/dp/9780321614414 Click on "Take a Look" in the upper left hand corner above the photo of the book. Here is the link for Lial's pre-algebra (I think): :) http://instructors.coursesmart.com/prealgebra-fourth-edition/margaret-l-lial-diana-l-hestwood/dp/9780321614469 Edited January 29, 2012 by Marla
Marla
My son is near the end of CLE 700. He is doing very well and it is pretty tough! Can you elaborate on what you means when you say it's tough? How is it different than CLE 600 in the toughness department? Just curious to hear your take on it. My dd has used CLE mid-300, 400, 500, and is finishing up 600. Thanks!
Blossom'sGirl
My 2nd ds is using CLE Math 600 and most likely we will continue to the 700 level. I own Lial's BCM and the layout is not open and go like CLE. I need to weed through the problems to determine what is an appropriate amount for classwork. Sometimes assigning just the odds is too many or way too repetitive. I like the constant review in CLE. My ds is does not really like it, but his math skills are much better than his older brother who has used Singapore then started BCM (seemed too easy for him) but switched to Auffman for pre-algebra. I do keep the Lial's books for reference just in case.

The amount of review and practice balances out just right for mine. I know that it works around here, and I subscribe to the "don't fix what ain't broke" club. We've been using it for over five years, and I've never been disappointed with it. After my youngest finishes CLE 7, she'll go to Saxon Algebra 1/2, probably sometime in the fall because we do math year-round although fewer days in the summer. The climb semed more gradual through 200-600. Math just takes longer, and sometimes we've gotten a bit tied up on the word problems because they have more steps. I don't have any complaints, but it does seem tougher.
Sweet Home Alabama
Thank you everyone. I have the CLE 700 and 800 math scope and sequence printed out and I'm going to compare it with the Lial's BCM. CLE is working for ds. That is a definite reason not to change. We could also go all the way through Alg I with CLE. Long term, however, I want ds to outsource math. (Dd is taking Alg. I with Jann in TX, and this is working very well.) If we're going to eventually change texts, we might as well make the change to get used to Lial's. I really appreciate everyone's input. It has helped to hear your comments about both of these math programs.

If we're going to eventually change texts, we might as well make the change to get used to Lial's. :iagree:I also want to outsource high school math and may enroll dd in Jann's pre-algebra class this fall which is why I'm contemplating switching to Lials after CLE 600 so dd can become familiar with the change in format beforehand. I agree with other posters about the ease and familiarity of CLE's format which is a plus but even though CLE will be offering Algebra 1, I don't think we'll use it. I want dd learning high school math from a teacher who knows her stuff and that's not me. I also desire to find a teacher/curriculum that we can stick with through high school so we don't have to switch things up. The question I need to answer is WHEN to make the change to Lial: after CLE 600 or CLE 700? Or we could even make the switch after CLE 800 so she can get consumer math, too? TracyR
I do agree. So far I've used CLE levels 100,200,400, and right now my 14yr old is doing the 700 series. It is 'tougher' more mulitstep word problems, lots of geometry. Very good for preparing for Algebra. the 700 and 800 are definitely a prealgebra. So after using both of them you could easily go right into Algebra 1.
