manyblessings
Those of you who have done island level using only one book at a time, what order did you go in with the books?

TheAutumnOak
We haven't completed the Island level (my son is started a different level after doing Grammar Island because he is older), but this is the sequence I have laid out for the next time I am doing the Island level... Grammar Island Building Language Sentence Island Music of the Hemispheres Practice Island is the only one you can't do one at a time because the sentences should be done as practice throughout the rest of the year once you finish Grammar Island...One sentence a day, 4 days a week over a 25 week period would get Practice Island done... kathy_overman
Can I jump in and ask ---- is there any type of lesson plan that MCT offers to help w/ this type of question?
EKS
We did Grammar Island, Sentence Island, Building Language, Music of the Hemispheres. We started Practice Island somewhere during Sentence Island.
ChandlerMom
Can I jump in and ask ---- is there any type of lesson plan that MCT offers to help w/ this type of question? Not a lesson plan per se, but there is a presentation on their website by MCT. Basically, you are "supposed" to do GI until it's done, then start Practice Island for the rest of the year. The other books are worked in simultaneously and you provide a lot of other good lit books on the side for reading/read-alouds. SatoriSmiles has a more detailed plan: http://satorismiles.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/MCT-Island-Schedule1.pdf
nmoira
Grammar Island comes before Sentence Island. The other books can be introduced in any order, at any time. We did one sentence a day from the practice book.
abrightmom
Can I jump in and ask ---- is there any type of lesson plan that MCT offers to help w/ this type of question? We just received the Basic Homeschool Package for the Island level. There was a sheet enclosed telling me when and how to teach all of the components. :001_smile: We are starting on Monday. I have read through much of the material. It's wonderful!
Kuovonne
For those of you who do Building Language before Music of the Hemispheres, could you please comment on why? We did them the other way around and I thought it worked to have a background in poetry before starting Building Language. In a few years I'll be doing island level again with my younger DD, and I'm interested in hearing the reasons for a different order. We did Grammar Island, Sentence Island, Building Language, Music of the Hemispheres. this is the sequence I have laid out for the next time I am doing the Island level... Grammar Island Building Language Sentence Island Music of the Hemispheres

The only reason I scheduled Building Language before Music of the Hemispheres is because of a sheet of paper that was mailed to me from the company with my order...I am pretty sure it reccomended doing it in this order... Grammar Island Building Language Sentence Island Music of the Hemispheres I am away from home so I can't double check, but if anyone else here received that paper, please chime in...I remember looking at it a few times because the website reccomends a different schedule... Yes, this is the order on the paper (which seems to be new; I think it had a copyright of 2011). MCT suggests to start Building Language after finishing the parts of speech section in Grammar Island and continue until it is done. After finishing Grammar Island, do a few weeks of Practice Island before starting Sentence Island. Then do Music of the Hemispheres last. I think this is what we will do. Heidi @ Mt Hope
We did Grammar Island, Sentence Island, Building Language, Music of the Hemispheres. We started Practice Island somewhere during Sentence Island. This is the order in which we used the books, as well.
Kuovonne
Wow, thanks for the clarification on the order of books. I had no idea I did them in the wrong order.
chiguirre
Wow, thanks for the clarification on the order of books. I had no idea I did them in the wrong order. Honestly, I don't think there's a wrong order. The only obvious order is to do GI before PI and SI. I think BL and MTH can be worked in anywhere. Satori used the presentation on the MCT site to make an awesome, detailed schedule. She did MTH before BL because there are some concepts that BL uses that MTH explains more thoroughly. Personally, I'm planning to follow EKS's plan and do GI, PI, SI and then do MTH and BL. I'd also put in a plug for doing MCT along with FLL and WWE. They're such different approaches that dd has gained a lot from seeing both.
