Mynyel
What is needed for this? I have been on the HWOT site but it isn't very clear on what is needed for Get Set for School. Can anyone tell me?
lorrainejmc
I used Get Set For School with both my boys. I ordered almost everything. :blushing: What you really need will depend on your child. My younger son soon got bored of play doh letters and the stamp and see. He is doing the K book now and doesn't use even the slate. He is the youngest and doesn't want to do "baby" school work. My older son used/still uses the slate but also wasn't bothered with the rest. If you think your child would benefit from manipulating the doh, I would go for that and the slate. The wooden pieces can wait till K if you think they would be helpful.
3peasinapod
The stamps seem like they would get boring (we never purchased it). The playdoh thing can be done without buying it. We just roll dough and put them on our little chalkboard. I think just the chalkboard is the best. I had an off brand of this board, and the HWT one is superior, and I recommend it. I think the wood pieces are essential, but if I were to purchase again, I would make them out of craft foam. There are patterns in the teacher's guide. So really, you would need the workbook, teacher's manual, and the slate IMO.
Stellalarella
I agree with PP--the student book, TM (if you aren't familiar with HWT), the slate and 1" pieces of chalk and a small sponge are the most important. Personally, we really enjoy the wooden pieces and the Get Set for School CD is the highest quality music CD I have for the kiddos. A 4 x 6 slate can be purchased at Michaels craft stores, if you have one nearby. The slate is nicer than chalkboard. It just has a wonderful, heavy feel. The chalk from HWT is the softer kind--NOT the harder "dustless" variety you might find at a big box store.
Wheres Toto
I'm doing HWT Get Set with my youngest. Originally I bought just the workbook and the teachers guide. I use a small magna doodle instead of the slate and made the capital letter pieces out of foam. My daughter managed to bend or tear the foam after just a couple of uses so I went ahead and ordered the wood pieces from HWT. :glare: It has been working very well for us so far. She loves playing with the wood pieces even outside of school. Her and my son spent a day making various animals with them after we did Mat Man (you can see here). My son is doing the first grade book and I didn't bother buying the Teachers guide for him but I had heard somewhere that it's good to have the TG for the younger years since there are so many extras in it plus a schedule. I don't use it a ton but I think it was worth buying.
ebrindam
What pieces are used for Mat Man? Is it just the wood letter pieces?
Wheres Toto
What pieces are used for Mat Man? Is it just the wood letter pieces? The wooden letter pieces and the foam mat, but you can use any rectangular piece of foam.
Tawlas
I got the K book and TM, along with the wooden letter peices and the slate. My son is 4.5 and we've been really enjoying the letter pieces as well as the chalk board. But I can break up my own chalk and cut up my own sponges lol. I've referred to the TM a fair bit cause I'm new to the program, but he isn't ready for the pencil work in the K book.
