Hunter's Moon
This may be a silly question, but do I need to bring my textbooks with me on the first day of class? My backpack is already heavy enough. I can't even imagine bringing the textbooks on Tuesdays because those books are even heavier. Bring textbook: Yea or nay? regentrude
I would bring the books on the first day of class. You can ask the professor if the books will be needed in every class; some classes do need the book every period (my DD's French class, for example, uses the textbook and workbooks daily), others (mine) don't. But on the first day, I would be sure to bring mine. ETA: If you really think this is too heavy, you need to email your instructor and ask. SkateLeft
My daughter brings her textbooks with her on the first day, and every day after that. She's on campus all day, and doesn't have a car to keep things in, so she totes everything in a large rolling backpack.
Nan in Mass
Does your school have lockers?
beaners
I've found that the only times I needed a textbook in class were the same days I left it behind. I'd bring it until your instructor says otherwise.
Hunter's Moon
Bringing 'em in, I guess. The school does have lockers; I found that info on their site. I didn't even think about that. I'll see what the teachers say about bringing them daily. Off to my first day of school :D
jillian
When I was in college it was a wash...some teachers didn't even ever USE the textbooks that they "required" therefore didn't need to bring them. Others wanted to see them every day because problems and such are in there. I would email and ask. For classes like Bio and general freshman classes the classes were so big that they just lectured and you rarely needed the books.
Teachin'Mine
I would bring it and ask about whether it's needed for future classes. I would also suggest looking for a rolling backpack to make hauling the texts around easier. You may find some really good sales right now. Did some googling and found this one: http://www.amazon.com/Bleacher-Rolling-Backpack-in-Purple/dp/B003XVJ9PK/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1327336364&sr=8-13 Not a bad price considering free shipping. You may find them on sale in local stores, but I know that after paying for textbooks and all, spending more on a backpack may not be a great idea. JennMcNeal23
The first day of class usually consists of the teachers going over syllabi. Sometimes you are even told that the book is optional. Depending on what kind of courses you are taking, you may need to bring some books to class on a regular basis but, in my experience, professors will let you know when and if you even need them. Don't put the strain on your back if you don't need to.
Hunter's Moon
Thanks for the advice, everyone. Turns out I'll need to bring books to all of my classes. Thankfully, I only have 2 per day.

Hunter's Moon
How did it go? It went well. I like all my classes so far, and all my professors seem great, too. It is an inner city community college, so I was expecting a lot of the students to act like it was still high school and disrupt classes, etc. but so far it hasn't been too much of a problem. I seem to have gotten lucky with the other students in my classes. Thanks for asking :001_smile:
memphispeg
We are cheering you on from down here. Get one of those rolling Backpacks/office gear packs from LLBean. My dd had to schlepp big math and art history books around for a while and her's really held up.
