frugalmama
Does it exist? I'm looking for something I can use with a 5-6 year old but isn't babyish - something on about a 2nd grade level. Any ideas? Cost is a factor too.

NotAVampireLvr
Adventures From The Book Of Virtues streams on Netflix... that show is based on the virtues compiled in the Book of Virtues edited by William J. Bennett. There are a number of studies that can accompany it... This is one that I thought was well done and FREE: http://www.shiveracademy.com/book-of-virtues.html
adventumacademy
This is free, with printables and book suggestions. There is a Bible verse copywork section but it is very easy to just skip that. http://www.thatresourcesite.com/lessons/Our_virtue_lessons.htm

I posted about this a couple of days ago and wrote up lessons based on that site. It's easy enough to delete all the religious references. WeeBeaks
Bucket Fillers: http://myfunteacher.com/bucketfillers.htm My 2nd grader liked this book. We used one of these as a brief picture book readaloud early in the year. Even my 3yo got the concept and walked around telling her brothers they were emptying her bucket for months. :D

Sade
That's cute :) There is a Bucket Fillers book for older children now, too, but my 2nd grader was not as interested in that one. I will wait til maybe 4th grade to check it out of the library again for him. We used one of these as a brief picture book readaloud early in the year. Even my 3yo got the concept and walked around telling her brothers they were emptying her bucket for months. :D
Lily_Grace
We enjoyed Value Tales. There's about 30 of them, each one a biography of a historical person with an emphasis on a character trait that made them who they were. Confucius - The Value of Honesty, for example. The book I linked is a compilation of 5, but the original are large white books.
NotAVampireLvr
I agree' date=' Value Tales are GREAT!!!! We also have a Scholastic series called Help Me Be Good, and a series of Arthur books I think they are called Arthur's Family Values. Another that I really like is the old Sweet Pickles books, we have almost all of the books and also the Sweet Pickles Bus that was supposed to be like a preschool curriculum, but there are many things that are based on character that we use with my kids who are older and they are simple enough our little guy can play too.[/quote'] Yes those Value Tales look awesome... and I can't believe someone else remembers the Sweet Pickle books!!!!!! NotAVampireLvr
You should have seen how crazy I went when I found the bus (actually there are 2 of them to hold the complete set) at a yard sale complete!! I had them when I was little and LOVED them' date=' I could not let them sit there... my hubby thought I was crazy for sure..lol. Sweet Pickles was what my whole life revolved around as a little kid![/quote'] I've been slowly collecting them as I need them... so far I have up to D and a couple random books I found at the thrift store. My kindergarten teacher read us Sweet Pickles every week.

mommymilkies
I've had good luck with William Bennett's books, though you do have to pick around them if you are trying to avoid all religious beliefs. :lurk5:
serendipitous journey
Here is a series that is intended to be universal (though written by Christian authors). Teaching Your Children Values Teaching Your Children Responsibility Teaching Your Children Joy I've ordered two of those titles, and requested the authors' book on building a strong family from the library. Thank you so much for those references!
Sade
There are a few books by author, Munro Leaf, but I found them to be too lengthy (for my 2nd grader) and kind of dry. But they would be worth taking a look at if they are at your library. Edited January 21, 2012 by Sade
Tawlas
http://www.amazon.com/Building-Moral-Intelligence-Essential-Virtues/dp/0787962260/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327180669&sr=8-1 http://www.amazon.com/Family-Virtues-Guide-Children-Ourselves/dp/0452278104/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1327180774&sr=1-1 I like those two books - they're more far a parent to read than books to read to a child - but they are very thorough with plenty of ideas.
