Haiku
My son bangs on everything: tables, books, floors, trash can lids, walls ... anything he can put his hands on, he bangs on. If he has something in his hand, he bangs it on whatever he's sitting by. Is there any way I can get him to stop, or should I just accept it? Every time he does it, I say, "[son], stop banging." But that does nothing to decrease the frequency of his banging. It drives everyone in the family insane. Tara
Caitilin
Does he have a stress ball or similar silent keep-hands-busy item he can occupy his hands with, at least during school hours? My ds9 doesn't do that particular thing, but he is a very, umm, mobile kid, and he is forever fiddling. He had a ball, and it did help a bit when he was younger. Also, you could try sitting on a pilates/yoga ball that would allow movement, and you might be able to head off the banging that way. For ds, sometimes reminders help, and he has outgrown a lot of it, but some days he is just wiggly. :grouphug:A commiserating hug for you. Or...you have a future drummer on your hands!
swellmomma
Put him in drum lessons and then let him us only a drum pad at home to practice? Maybe he will be part of "Stomp" when he grows up. I have to admit I am impressed that all you say is "stop banging". I would start there, but soon it would be "knock it off!" followed by me removing any items from his hands. I am mean that way though, I have sensory issues with sound and the house is plenty loud enough without ectra banging just to bang. I have thought about drum lessons for the boys though so at least then it is purposeful banging.
