Dustybug
I've posted a few times about not really liking Singapore math so far and possibly switching my daughter to something different. I've been looking seriously at Horizons. If I finish this year with Singapore (we're using Earlybird US edition), could I place her in Horizons 1? Or would there be gaps that need to be filled in from Horizons K?
SebastianCat
I would look at Horizons' placement tests online before deciding. It's been a few years ago, but when my DS was in kindergarten he finished the Singapore Earlybird series (which I think was a little different), then did Singapore Primary 1A and part of 1B. He went from there into Horizons 1 for 1st grade. Horizons is very fast paced, so keep that in mind when placing. I would probably lean toward doing a lower level, and moving quicker through concepts that your child has already mastered, as opposed to placing her too high and struggling. happyhomemaker
I've never used Singapore, but we do use Horizons. They have a placement test on their website that might be helpful. The beginning of Horizons 1 has a lot of review from K (that's one of the nice things about a spiral program) so I would imagine you would be fine to put her in 1. If you come across a gap, you could just take a few days off of the regular schedule until she gets it.
Crimson Wife
FWIW, I've heard (from board members whose opinions I trust about math) that Singapore Early Bird is very different from the Primary Math series. I would recommend at least previewing 1A/B before you decide to jump ship to another curriculum.
MerryAtHope
You'll probably be fine with 1, but let it take extra time if needed, it can move quickly in places.
chicagoshannon
Money is introduced in Horizons K as well as counting by 2,3,4,5,10. We also learned Perimeter, weight, volume in Horizons K. I just moved from Horizons K to Singapore 1A and it looks to be a lateral move to me.
Mrs Twain
We withdrew our son from public school in the middle of first grade. He had done public school math for K and half of 1st, which wasn't very much IMO (besides the math problems my dh would quiz the kids with once on a while). We started with Horizons 1 in the middle of first grade. I looked through the TM and the workbook to see what he already knew. I skipped about the first 20-30 lessons since that was easy for him. Then we did two lessons per day (including the TM activities) so we could get finished with it by the end of the year. It worked fine. I wrote all of that just to say that I bet your child will be fine starting Horizons 1 at the beginning of first grade. However. ****be sure to do the activities in the TM****. The TM activities for each day (concept teaching with manipulatives or a white/chalk board, drill work, speed tests, etc.) are at least half of the math program.
