Blueridge
We have (what I think is) a problem. A dog problem. Let me explain. We live in the country, and have only one neighbor that we really don't know. He is a single guy, who until a month ago would leave for work at exactly at 6:30 am and return home around 5 in the evening. He has 2 dogs, an obnoxious terrier and a beautiful husky, and he would often be in the yard with them. As I said, things changed about a month ago. He left one morning, apparently took the terrier, and went somewhere. It must be somewhere relatively close by, because every few days he drives up the road to his house, stays a few minutes, then leaves again. I assumed it was to check on things and feed his husky. Notice I said every few days...that poor dog just sits in his yard, looking at the road, and waiting. It was breaking my heart, and my girl's hearts, too. He seems so loyal and trusting. :crying: Well, a few days ago as I was driving up our road, he started following our car to our house. He was wagging his tail...looking so sad and hopeful. I just couldn't help it, gosh darn it. I went inside and grabbed the leftovers and fed him. He was so happy and so were we. He ran around and around in circles, the girls played with him. I know he isn't our dog, but enough is enough. Now what. He is sleeping in our front yard like he's guarding us. When we come out, he is there wagging his tail. I don't know what I should do...take food to his house and feed him there? Stop feeding him altogether? Adopt him and tell the neighbor what we've done if he ever comes home again? I have created a problem, but my girls love him and have named him Dr. Cooper. :) What is the right thing to do, now that I have fed him? Slipper
Leave a note on the neighbor's door and explain that his dog seemed lonely and followed you home. Tell him that you hope he doesn't mind but your girls love him and you are feeding him. Tell him that if he ever wants to give the dog up for adoption you would love to have him. My guess is he will give the dog to you. Good for you for looking after him. :)

celticmom
If it is any comfort going on a walkabout and adopting a new family is a breed charactaristic for huskies. One followed dd and dh home once when we lived in a neighborhood and then decided our front porch was his new home. I did not want a large dog at that point in time but was willing to keep him if he needed a home. On my next day off I took him to the vet and he had a chip and they were able to contact his owner to come get him.
