ravinlunachick
DS is out of school tomorrow due to one, and I started thinking that maybe I should schedule some teacher workdays of my own. Wouldn't it be nice to have a block of 8 or so hours to dedicate to preparation and research/teacher development? Ideally, I'd have no kids to take care of for a few hours, but that surely won't be the case tomorrow. I think I might give dd the day (mostly) off and spend my time organizing and preparing. What about you? Have you ever planned teacher workdays for your homeschool?
lauracolumbus
I think it's a great idea. And if I told my kids that the only school work they had to do was to either read or play educational games all day, I'd get a good chunk of time to get caught up on planning/grading. However, it would be so tempting to use that time to get caught up on organizing the house as well. Laura
8circles
I don't think I could manage it until my little one isn't so little but I think its a great idea.
Daisy
My husband helps me out with this twice a year. Once during the summer and again during Christmas break. He takes the kids to the zoo, bowling, movie, whatever, while I plan. I LOVE IT. Having a few hours block of time really helps get the bulk of it done. MariannNOVA
Isn't 'Teacher Workday' redundant? :D :lol::lol:
luvnlattes
I think it sounds like a great idea but I've never done it.
Down_the_Rabbit_Hole
Yep. It isn't exactly scheduled but when I feel I need time with organizing, getting lists of supplies, library book lists and what not. Usually it is about every 9 weeks. I try to figure things for the kids to do solo but it usually just ends up being a day off for them.

Pink and Green Mom
Yep! DH will usually take the kids up to see his parents for an overnight. Unfortunately it doesn't happen often enough (is once a week too much to ask, LOL).
In the Rain
Yes. My girls are 10 & 7. I give them a list of unusual cleaning chores and then I basically let them play all day. My girls are familiar with the concept of students cleaning and caring for the one room school house in pioneer times, so they find it entertaining. Sometimes I work through a list of topics I want to research. Mostly I listen to downloaded talks. I find it inspirational. It is kind of a mini homeschool conference at home. :001_smile:
ravinlunachick
It's going really well for me so far today. I've gotten lots of material organized for the upcoming few weeks, and I'm about to start planning for dd3, who has been demanding "work" instead of just toys or coloring sheets at the table. I've also managed to get a few loads of laundry done. Go me!
TheAutumnOak
I have been thinking about this as well...I end up taking a day or so to "catch up" on things, but I decided this year to schedule actual teacher days...I am trying to think through how often I will need them, and exactly what I should so during them ;)
thescrappyhomeschooler
I planned a Teacher Work Week in August. I signed both kids up for chess camp, so they were gone for 7 hours for 5 days in a row! I got the whole year planned and organized. It was awesome. ETA: Plus, they loved the chess camp, so it was a win/win!
mamajudy
Absolutely! Dh is a teacher, so I follow the public schools schedule; when they have a TWD, I have a TWD. I use this time to keep up to date with my log, to plan ahead, and to get whatever else done that I seem to be behind on. If I don't do this, I get hopelessly behind by November! *Lulu*
Certainly! I do two half-days every six weeks, and a week during our break between school years. I have to take a little longer because it isn't practical for me to send the kids away all at once or wise for me to leave them completely to thier own devices lest they become feral! A few half-days of benign neglect work fabulously, and it makes the days that we are schooling MUCH smoother and more productive.
