momma aimee
what do you buy -- hard copy or e-book or CD .. they all seem a bit differnt in content not just in delievery form. :001_unsure: i do not really like e-books, they are ok -- teh ebooks seems most complect and supposedly you also get the 'soft pack'. i don't know if i should get the e-book, print it and binder it, or what i should do? Planning to get MM 1st grade for the rest of this "kindy year" also is the e-book is not just the student text and answer key is it -- i does include the teachers text, right? momma aimee
Math Mammoth Grade 1 Complete Worktext (download)The full set. Contains two parts of the worktext, A and B, answer keys, tests, cumulative reviews, a worksheet maker, and Soft-Pak teachers text???? is there not one? wapiti
There is no teacher text for MM. All the teaching is in the student worktext. There are notes to the teacher at the beginning of each chapter. I prefer the downloaded PDFs. I print as we go, usually a week or so at a time. Then I 3-hole punch, and when the pages are done, they go into the binder. The "Light Blue" grade-level PDFs include chapter reviews, cumulative chapter reviews, and chapter tests (and of course the answer keys). Be forewarned that MM1 is not meant to be a K program, so your child may or may not be up to the amount of writing involved - it depends on your kid. Stuart
I am not a big fan of downloads but it is easy to use. Everything you need is included. There is no teacher text the teaching is on the student pages. With the download you can make extra worksheets if needed. I like that feature when I give a review "quiz" to make sure skills are being retained. At the beginning of each chapter there is an introduction and extra websites you could use. Those don't need to be printed. I print a chapter at a time as needed. I really didn't think I would like doing it this way, but it has been no problem and it is a really good program so its worth the effort. Homemama2
I have bought the hard copy (which was black and white) and the cd (can print it in color or b&w). I like the color and the cd I can reprint pages if needed. Also there is a worksheet maker that comes with it, but I haven't used it yet. I bought the cd instead of just the download only bc I've had computer problems in the past and I wanted a cd for a backup. On the MM website it tells about how many pages to do per day (early grades are about 1 page, I think).
boscopup
The CD and download content are the same. Not quite sure about the softpak. I installed it but never use it. I did the download for the instant gratification, plus I can make my own CD for backup purposes (I haven't - it's backed up on an external hard drive and Google Docs). The print version is black and white only. I don't know if it includes the cumulative reviews and tests? I'd want to make sure before buying. HSBC does a deal on MM twice a year. I paid $65 for the download of all 6 grades, and that includes free upgrades.
DaffodilDreams
I don't like downloads, either, so I chose the workbooks. It really wasn't all that expensive considering everything I was previously buying from Singapore. The teaching is in the workbooks and is written to the student, but I love seeing how Maria teaches the concepts because there are sometimes light bulb moments for me. I have found a mistake here and there but not too many so far. I don't know if the downloads are this way or not, but the workbooks spend a LOT of time on one topic. Each topic is explored thoroughly and progresses in difficulty bit by bit with each lesson within that topic. That was a change for us coming out of Singapore, but it seems to be really driving concepts home for dd at this point. Sometimes I feel like screaming because we've spent so much time in one area, but that's just me and I try to keep those screams silent and in my head. ; ) Oh, I ordered my workbooks from Rainbow Resource, and they took FOREVER to get here. I'm talking two months. ?!?!?! I called ready to cancel and try to find them elsewhere because I just couldn't wait any longer and suddenly they were shipping the next day. I'm not sure what happened there but just a head's up for you.

Yes. It's free to save your downloaded documents to Google Docs. As you buy, just keep in mind that she is rewriting the curriculum to reflect common core standards. If you buy a CD from elsewhere (like Rainbow Resource), it may be an "in stock" one and not the latest that she's recently enabled for annotating: "The downloadable version PDFs are enabled for annotating. This means that the student can actually complete the PDF file on the computer, using the typewriter and drawing tools available in Acrobat Reader version 9 or higherm, or on a tablet device such as an iPad, using a PDF app that has annotating tools." HSBC did two deals last year on MM, but they aren't sure if they are going to run it again this year. They told me that they approached her but haven't heard yet. Yes, I just got the updated version of this, and it works fabulously on my tablet, btw. ;) I don't know if CD's get free upgrades? I would guess probably not. So that might be something else to consider. If you purchase the download, you can e-mail Maria and get the latest version whenever she updates it. I ordered the light blue set through HSBC last spring, and when I got my tablet for Christmas and found I couldn't annotate the copy I had, I e-mailed Maria and she gave me a link to download the set again. This is the second time I've gotten an update for free (first one was when she released the upgraded 1st grade materials.. I'd ordered via CurrClick, and their system was messed up and not sending out the links to get the update). HSBC did two deals last year on MM, but they aren't sure if they are going to run it again this year. They told me that they approached her but haven't heard yet. Good to know! They really are a great deal. If that deal doesn't come through again, she often runs 20% off sales. I've NEVER paid full price for a set. I bought 1st and 2nd grade levels separately (CurrClick and Kaji) and then the grade 1-6 package through HSBC. Both of the individual grade levels were purchased during different sales. They seem to run about every other month or so.
sncstraub
right now, I scribe for him all but one page of math each day -- and he does handwritting -- so I expect to continue doing that, but i need to up his mental challage (he was 6 in Nov) though not his fine motor. is there a schdule of any kind -- or it is just "go at your own pace" 2 pages or 10 a day ..... My K-er is soon finishing up his Essential Math B book, and I'll most likely move him into MM 1, too. As he'll be starting it earlier than 1st grade, I expect to take it slower than normal, and I'll help with the scribing if needed. My 3rd grader also uses MM, and he does 1.5-2 pages/day. I just counted up the number of pages and figured out that we need to complete that many each day to finish 3A in a semester (he's 1/2 a level behind since we didn't start with MM). If you have a child who speeds thru it with ease, keep challenging him by giving him more (cross out problems and move ahead). My guy needs the review so our crossing-out is kept to a minimum. I got the PDF downloads, btw. I love that I can reuse it for each kid, reprint anything necessary, and get free upgrades.
Chrysalis Academy
I guess I've been kind of old-fashioned; I got the worktexts for my dds, because they like to have a write-in book, and like to be able to do it different places (snuggling on the couch for dd5). I got the support pack as a download, which is super convenient to just download the cum reviews, tests, and extra worksheets as needed. Kathryn
Glad to hear about the tablet! I've been considering going that route. Mommee & Baba
I print the download and spiral bind it. Me too. Because I needed to be able to REUSE as much curriculum as I can that I purchase. Purchasing already printed would've saved me SO much time...but NOT money because I have multiple kids going to be using the SAME math curriculum. During summer break I print out all their math for the upcoming year, 3 hole punch and put into a binder.

black_midori
For 1st grade & 2a, I downloaded and had Kinkos print & spiral bind. For 2b I forgot to do that (I lost track of time!) so I am just printing it one week at a time. I am not sure if I will get 3 or just try the online ALEKS for awhile - decision pending! :) I'd probably download and print it myself again, though - a bit of a pain to print & pick up & they kept messing up where the tests went. I do like the spiral bind, though! If I had an ipad I'd totally get the pdf & try the mark-up tool - except then they'd fight over who got to do math!! :D
alpidarkomama
With 4 kids that will be cycling through MM, it was clearly a better deal for me get the e-book!
jhockley
Wow- it works on an iPad?! Dd would LOVE that. Is there more info on how to that works/what I need on her website? I admit at first coming off Singapore I didn't like MM, but I'm a creature of habit. It's growing on me and I'm still up in the air as which to get for next year. I got the print version since it I wanted to be able to carry it around, and wasn't that much more than printing it myself, but the iPad will take care of that, plus put it in color and be reusable for ds. Thinking if I do go with it I'll do pdf version. I don't recall any tests so far in the print version, just chapter reviews. And no answer keys (not that I need them at this level, but just saying). In the teachers intro to the section it breaks down the pages into daily chunks. Between 2 and 4 usually, like more pages doing time b/c clocks take up more page space. TheApprentice
I used the hard copy last year with MM5, and this year I downloaded the pdf file. I prefer the downloading because it's in color and the layout is clearer. (probably because of the color, which makes the explanations clearer). There are also less problems on a page. A two page lesson in hard copy may be spread out in 3 or 4 pages in pdf.
In the Rain
Generally speaking, I don't like downloadable curricula. I bought the MM bundle last year through HSBC because it was such a great deal. It worked out to be easier than I expected. I printed off a semester's worth of the workbook and had it spiral bound. They put a sheet of cardboard at the back so dd can sit on the couch with it. One feature of the ebook I have really appreciated is the ability to print off clean copies of pages that need to be reworked. We have occasionally hit a rough spot where I wanted to have the girls redo several pages.
TheAutumnOak
Looks like there are many different options!... I have the CD and prefer to print out curriculum whenever I can because I have a filing system to hold everyone's work...It is easier for me to file loose papers than a workbook... I also prefer to print math because if there are too many mistakes (what happens when someone misunderstands instructions), I reprint it after we go over it and let the child do it over... shukriyya
I bought the download and then had it printed up elsewhere. I wanted it in color so had it printed that way. One word, $$$ :001_huh: Still, the color does add a nice touch. Not sure if I'll do a repeat of that process though.
Forget-Me-Not
I bought the PDF version (through HSBC's deal), and then took the grades I wanted to print on a thumb drive to Kinko's and had them printed and spiral bound. It was CONSIDERABLY cheaper to have it printed in B&W, and it hasn't been any problem at all to not have it in color.
desertmum
I bought the PDF (ebook) version. I live overseas so I save on shipping and handling by downloading. I am still working through SM Essential math (K) but I will be moving on to MM afterwards. I intend to have everything printed in black and white at the local stationary shop. I can puch holes in put it in a binder (I do that with handwriting already) so if I need to reprint a page, or insert extra practice worksheets I can do that easily. Elfknitter.#
I have the ebooks saved on a flash drive, my home computer and maybe my work computer... :blushing: I can print it at work and that's worked well for us. I'm planning on having the completed books bound at Kinko's or Office Depot. I like that buying the ebook meant instantaneous gratification. Wabi Sabi
I have been very happy with the downloadable PDF. I've printed out one semester's worth at a time at home, hole punched and stuck it in a binder. FWIW, black and white laser printers have come down in price to the point where they're actually quite inexpensive. I can buy toner on Amazon for under $20 that lasts all year and at the beginning of the year I bought an entire box of copy paper on sale for $22. I can print out hundreds of pages as needed for a negligible cost.

Tarreymere
We have the ebook for Math Mammoth. DD looks at it on the computer or on the kindle (if you do this make sure you enlarge the text) and does the problems on a whiteboard. We try not to print much to save money. DD likes doing the problems in different colored markers and that erasing is so easy. I do have to do a portfolio in my state but I have been just printing the chapter tests and saving those.
