ThisIsTheDay
My 13yods enjoyed The Christmas Carol. I'd love to get another Dickens book into his hands. What else might he enjoy?

Mrs Mungo
Tale of Two Cities is one of my favorites...or David Copperfield. Great Expectations is a good story, but the characters are so whiny that I can't stand it!
Carol in Cal.
Tale of Two Cities. I found David Copperfield so depressing that it put me off Dickens and 'classics' for years.

ErinE
Tale of Two Cities. I love the first and last sentences. It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. Tis a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; tis a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known.
jhschool
The Pickwick Papers. If you want to be depressed, get Great Expectations. Wonderful book, but ... Or Oliver Twist. Sad, sad, sad. But you can't go wrong with The Pickwick Papers.

J-rap
At that age, David Copperfield and Nicholas Nickleby. I liked others just as much and more, but these would be good ones for his age.

A Christmas Carol is probably the most upbeat of them all.
Mrs Mungo
I loved Great Expectations! I guess it is a little depressing, but a great story! I don't hate the story, I hate the characters. It would have been more satisfying if they had all died in an explosion at the end. George Martin SHOULD (I fixed the typo, this phone drives me nuts!) rewrite it. Edited January 11, 2012 by Mrs Mungo

Kate CA
My 13yods enjoyed The Christmas Carol. I'd love to get another Dickens book into his hands. What else might he enjoy? David Copperfield and Bleak House!
OrganicAnn
Bleak House would be my pick. You know Christmas Carol is so short compared to most of Dickens novels. You might want to go with the shortest one (I'm not sure which is the shortest) and then he can work his way up. I can't remember if Dickens had any novela or short shories. Chelli
A Tale of Two Cities was the first Dickens novel that I ever read and actually enjoyed, so I vote that one :001_smile:
